Eye Exam For Children

As a parent, you may wonder whether your preschooler has a vision problem or when you should schedule your child's first eye exam.
Eye exams for children are extremely important, because 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems.* Early identification of a child's vision problem can be crucial because children often are more responsive to treatment when problems are diagnosed early.

For school-aged children, the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or as recommended by their optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Early eye examinations are crucial to make surechildren have normal, healthy vision so they can perform better at schoolwork or play.

Why Have an Eye Exam?

Vision loss can happen to anyone, at any age, but many people aren’t aware that 75 per cent of vision loss can be prevented or treated. That’s why visiting Doctor of Optometry regularly is so important.
Your eyes are for life – and unless you take care of them, you could be at risk of losing a lifetime of sight and so much more.

What to expect during an eye exam?

Visit your Doctor of Optometry? Don’t be nervous – getting an eye exam is easy. Here's a step-by-step primer on what you can usually expect...
  1. Pre-testing
First, you’ll be pre-tested, likely by a technician or an assistant. This consists of a series of tests, which may include a “puff test” (a quick puff of air against the eyeball) to measure your internal eye pressure and detect glaucoma.
  2. Meeting your doctor
Next you'll be introduced to your Doctor of Optometry who will take a thorough case history.
  3. Testing your eye power
Your Doctor of Optometry will measure your prescription or the power of your eyes to determine if you require eyeglasses, and, if so, how strong they should be.
  4. Looking closer
You’ll be examined with a device called a slit lamp. This allows the doctor to examine the front of the eye including the eyelids, corneas and pupil reflexes.
  5. Getting eye drops
You may then have drops put in your eyes to dilate your pupils. They take about 15 minutes to take effect.
  6. Further testing
After your pupils have dilated, your Doctor of Optometry will continue to examine your eyes to check for any abnormalities or causes for concern, again using the slit lamp and a specially designed head lamp. The whole exam usually takes about 30 minutes.
  7. Final recommendations
After the exam is finished, your Doctor of Optometry will review the results and talk with you about their recommendations.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Did you know that everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens? Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which the optic nerve is damaged leading to progressive, irreversible vision loss if left untreated.  Some forms of glaucoma have virtually no symptoms.

Glaucoma has been called the "silent thief of sight" because the loss of vision often occurs gradually over a long period of time, and symptoms only occur when the disease is quite advanced. Once lost, vision cannot normally be recovered, so treatment is aimed at preventing further loss. Glaucoma is the second-most common cause of blindness after cataracts, in the United States. If the condition is detected early enough, it is possible to arrest the development or slow the progression with medical and surgical means.

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, everyone is at risk for glaucoma.  However, the following groups of people have been identified to be at a higher risk for developing glaucoma:
1.       People over 60.
2.       Family Members with Glaucoma.
3.       Hispanics in Older Age Groups
4.       African Americans and people of African descent.
5.       People of Asian descent, especially those of Japanese descent.
6.       Steroid Users like those who require approximately 14 to 35 puffs per day of steroid inhaler to control severe asthma.
7.       Those with eye injury. The glaucoma can occur immediately after the injury or years later. The most common cause is sports-related injuries such as baseball or boxing.

Orange City: 386-774-5000

It’s important to have visual testing done on a regular basis.  These screenings test visual acuity, or the ability to see objects and details at both far and near distances. It also involves the standard reading letters of different sizes on an eye chart.  For further information on maintaining healthy eyes check out eye health checklist for 2012.

Vision screening is especially important for children as it can detect eye problems that are commonly occurring which means they are apparent in approximately 1% of the total population.  Early detection can help fix these issues.

The most commonly used method is visual acuity which is used to evaluate eyesight. Each eye is tested individually and then both eyes are screened at the same time. We advise our clients that already wear contacts or glasses to wear them during their vision screening.  The best possible vision screening result is 20/20.

If we feel that your eyes require further testing, we’ll gladly schedule you a full eye exam with our in-house optometrist. Please note there is a charge for this appointment.  You are free to schedule an appointment with another optometrist if you wish.

20/20 Eyeglass Superstore is a family owned and operated business with locations throughout central Florida.  We look forward to becoming your trusted source for everything related to eye care, glasses and contacts.  Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us anytime.
