How to Maintain Good Eye Health

1. Eat for Good Vision
Protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts, studies show. Regularly eating these foods can help lead to good eye health:
  • Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards
  • Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish
  • Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources
  • Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which makes you less likely to get obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults.
2. Quit Smoking
Smoking makes you more likely to get cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration.
3. Wear Sunglasses
The right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Too much UV exposure makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration.
If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. It's still a good idea to wear sunglasses for more protection, though.
4. Use Safety Eyewear
If you work with hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles every time.
5. Look Away From the Computer Screen
Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause:
  • Eyestrain
  • Blurry vision
  • Trouble focusing at a distance
  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Neck, back, and shoulder pain
Taking the following steps to protect your eyes:
  • Make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date and adequate for computer use.
  • Some people may need glasses to help with contrast, glare, and eye strain when using a computer.
  • Position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen.
  • Try to avoid glare on your computer from windows and lights. Use an anti-glare screen if needed.
  • Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it so that your feet are flat on the floor.
  • If your eyes are dry, blink more.
  • Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15-minute break.

What Is Farsightedness?

FarsightednessWhat Is Farsightedness?

Farsightedness means that it’s easy for you to see things that are far away, but your close-up vision is blurry.

Causes of Farsightedness

You are more likely to have farsightedness if your parents have this condition. It often develops in adults as the lenses of your eyes age.

Some of the symptoms of farsightedness are due to this extra eyestrain. Symptoms include:

  •

Diagnosing Farsightedness

Make an appointment with an eye doctor if your vision is blurry when looking at objects up close. He or she can easily diagnose farsightedness during a basic eye examination.

Treating Farsightedness

The simplest way to correct farsightedness is to get prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. These corrective lenses change the way light enters your eyes, helping you focus better.

Preventing Farsightedness

Getting regular eye exams can help catch problems before they worsen. human Your eye is an amazing organ that most of us rely on every waking moment of the day.  From morning till night, our vision allows us to see beautiful Florida sunsets, our beloved family and much more.  Here at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, our main goal is to keep you up-to-date on everything related to eye care and eye health.

Shift Your Focus to Eye Health In The Digital Age

Shift Your Focus to Eye Health In The Digital AgeThe eyes have it — strain, that is. As our enthusiasm for using computers, tablets and phones grows, our eyes are paying the price.

Upward of 90 percent of computer and device users experience a problem so common there’s a name for it: computer vision syndrome (CVS). CVS comes with symptoms such as decreased or blurred vision, burning or stinging eyes, sensitivity to light, headaches, and back and neck pain.

1. Adjust your viewing angle
The best angle, the center of the monitor, tablet or phone should be 20 to 28 inches from your eyes and 4 to 5 inches below eye level.

2. Reduce glare
Position your screen to avoid glare from overhead lights or windows.

3. Rest your eyes
Every 20 minutes, look away from your computer and look at a distant object for 20 seconds.

4. Blink often
To reduce the risk of dry eye, remind yourself to blink more often. And refresh your eyes periodically with lubricating eye drops.

5. Get your eyes checked
Uncorrected vision problems — farsightedness or astigmatism, problems focusing or coordinating the eyes and changes associated with aging — can contribute to eyestrain and musculoskeletal pain.
Even if you don’t need glasses or contacts for daily activities, you may need them for computer or device use. If you do wear glasses or contacts and need to tilt your head or lean toward the screen to see it clearly, your lens prescription may need to be adjusted.

You can read on www.nj.com

Eat Grapes for Super Eye Health

Eat Grapes for Super Eye HealthApart from other health benefits, do you know that grapes can work in multiple ways to promote your eye health?

Grapes promote eye health from signaling changes at the cellular level to directly countering oxidative stress.

The researchers investigated (Abigail Hackam from University of Miami, Florida) whether a diet supplemented with grapes could protect the photoreceptors in mice with retinal degeneration. The retina is the part of the eye that contains the cells that respond to light, known as photoreceptors.

Grape consumption also protected retinal function in an oxidative stress model of degeneration.
Further analysis revealed that the grape diet resulted in lower levels of inflammatory proteins and higher amounts of protective proteins in the retinas.

Smoking Increase risk of Cataract & AMD

Smoking Increase risk of Cataract & AMDSmoking in your teens or twenties when your senior years seem far away – increases your future risks for cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). And the more a person smokes, the higher the risks. The good news is that after people quit smoking, their risks for these eye diseases becomes almost as low as for people who never smoked.

Smoking also raises the risks for cardiovascular diseases that indirectly influence your eyes’ health. And tobacco smoke, including second-hand smoke, is an irritant that worsens dry eye, a very uncomfortable eye condition that is most common in women after menopause.

Smoking increases the risk of serious vision loss in people with other eye diseases. Women who smoke during pregnancy they are more likely to give birth prematurely, putting their babies at higher risk for a potentially blinding disease called retinopathy of prematurity.

How long do you spend in front of a screen?

How long do you spend in front of a screen?Four hours, Seven hours, more than ten? Most of us spend around 6-9 hours a day on a digital device, another 28% spend more than ten hours a day in front of one type of screen or another.
Your eyes can begin to feel strain in as little as two hours. It doesn’t matter how old you are or how good your eye sight is, all of that screen time isn’t good for you.

The eyes clean and moisten themselves each time you blink. Computer use reduces your blink rate by as much as five times. When you are on a computer you also more likely to have incomplete blinks. That is when a blink does not fully cover the cornea of your eye. This can result in eye strain, fatigue, and headaches.

Reduced blinking is most associated with Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). It Symptoms include:
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Blue Light is Bad For Your Eye Health

Blue Light Dangerous for your EyesBlue light (or high-energy visible light) is bad for you when you are trying to sleep and it’s equally bad for you when you are working. All of your electronic devices give off this high-energy visible light (HEV).

Blue light is able to pass through what is called the retinohypothalamic tract, or pathway. This pathway is responsible for regulating our circadian rhythm a number of other biological and behavioral processes.

Because of how sensitive our eyes are to blue light, it is believed that it effects our behavioral and biological processes more than other types of light.

Blue light causes rhodopsin to regenerate photochemically (meaning it happens in the presence of light instead of in its absence). The blue light causes your rhodopsin to become unbleached very quickly, much more so than when it occurs naturally. This allows more light to enter the retina before it is ‘ready’ which can cause damage to the sensitive cell tissue in your eyes.

So you take the cumulative effects of blue light and regular light and what you are left with is a big old mess. Our eyes don’t need any more help with wear and tear, it happens naturally as we age. Digital devices can compound and intensify this damage.

You can read more about blue light and rhodopsin.
Your vision is priceless and it is important that you maintain your visual wellness by scheduling a yearly comprehensive eye exam with your optometrist or ophthalmologist.

How Often Do I Need New Glasses?

How Often Do I Need New Glasses? Many of us go for years at a time without considering changing out our glasses because we doggedly believe that we can still see perfectly with our old lenses.

While you may not have noticed or realized it, your old eyeglasses may be working against you, causing undue eyestrain or fatigue.

But how often should we replace our glasses, and why?

Listen to the Advice of Your Optometrist

Your glasses should be replaced when your optometrist recommends that they should be. This usually will occur in tandem with your regular eye exam.

The American Optometric Association recommends that non-senior adults and children over age 6 have regular eye exams a minimum of once every two years if they do not have risk factors for poor vision.

Seniors over age 60 and individuals with risk factors should have an eye exam every year, or more frequently if recommended by their doctor.

During this regular eye exam, you will need to ask your optometrist whether or not you need to replace your glasses with a new pair. Be sure to bring your old glasses with you so that your eye doctor can inspect them for flaws and durability.

There are several reasons why your doctor will recommend that you get new glasses, even if you feel like you can see well with your old glasses.

Subtle Changes
If you are using an outdated prescription, you may be causing yourself undue eyestrain. Our prescriptions change subtly over time, so while you may believe that you’re seeing everything perfectly, you are probably actually having to unconsciously strain your eyes to see adequately.
If you are probably having to try too hard to focus your eyes, which means you need a new prescription for your glasses.

New Technology
Every year, improvements are made in lens design to help offer you the best in vision.
For example, if you work long hours staring at a computer screen, there are lenses which can help to reduce the glare of the screen and reduce your overall eye strain.

Damage
You may have done everything you could to prevent damage to your glasses, but it is possible that they still could be scratched or defective in some way.
