You Should Have Your Eyes Examined Annually

You Should Have Your Eyes Examined AnnuallyOur eyes are very delicate organs, and we should plan routine eye exams whether or not we notice any problems.
Some other reasons for having eyes examined annually are:
  1. Myopia: short-sightedness, or the inability to see things at a distance
  2. Hyperopia: far-sightedness, or the inability to see things at close distances
  3. Eyeglass prescription changes occur every 1 to 2 years
  4. Presbyopia: the inability to see things at near after the age of 40 years
  5. Contact lens wearers are at greater risk of eye infections and corneal ulcers
  6. It is important that your vision meets certain legal standards for driving and certain occupations.
By getting your eyes checked regularly, you’ll be able to keep them healthy your whole life. Neglect can be costly!

Eyeglasses For Your Children

iStock_000020074017XSmall-270x300According to Parenting.com, approximately one in twenty preschoolers wear eyeglasses. This is an important statistic to consider if you haven’t taken your child to get his or her eyes checked. If you find out your little bundle of joy needs corrective lenses, here’s how to choose the best frames:

1. Choose eyeglasses that flatter your child’s face. Most children have round faces which means a squarish style will look best. You should also choose smaller frames.

2. Pick frames that are flexible for your child. We know bright, colorful, plastic frames are all the rage for 2013 but they can be brittle and break easily. Metal frames are easier to adjust and you should look for eyeglasses with titanium hinges that will bend easily with your children’s movements.

3. Pick frames that are impact-resistant such as polycarbonate lenses. We all remember gym class, make sure your child’s eyeglasses will stand the “ball in the face” test. Another way to protect your child’s lenses is to add an antireflective coating.

The best way to choose eyeglasses for your children is to include them in the process. Personally, my daughter needed to start wearing eyeglasses when she was six years old. I was very worried that she wouldn’t want to wear eyeglasses, but, surprisingly, she was very excited to purchase her new frames! She started a trend in her school and all the kids begged their parents to purchase frames, even if they didn’t need a prescription!

If you’re on the market for new eyeglasses for your children, we hope you’ll consider 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore. You’re welcome to bring your little one into any of our locations and try on as many pairs as you like. We look forward to seeing you soon.

We have exciting prizes for you so hurry up!! Drop in at any of our 20/20 Eyeglass Superstores to try on our latest styles and earn a spin on the prize wheel.

Lack of Sleep Affects Your Eyesight

Lack of Sleep Affects Your EyesightIn today’s hectic world, it is common to miss out on getting enough sleep each night. The truth is that it is challenging to balance proper rest with all the various activities that need to get completed each day.

Eye Spasms

An eye twitch is when you have an involuntary spasm in your eyelid. This issue is called myokymia.
It turns out, lack of sleep is one of the leading causes of eye spasms. The good news is that it isn’t a serious problem, and it is one that is easily corrected by making sure that you are getting enough quality rest.

Eye Diagnoses Caused by Lack of Sleep

One condition that can result from lack of sleep is ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). This will occur with a pain in the eye shortly after you wake up. Ischemic optic neuropathy is due to damage in the optic nerve from lack of blood supply.

Suggestions for Good Sleep

If you find that you are having a difficult time falling asleep at night, there are various options for remedying the situation. One thing you can do is to try drinking a cup of chamomile tea shortly before you plan to go to bed. This is a great way to relax before sleep.

Another method that works for many people is reading a book in bed. You will likely find yourself getting drowsy, and then you can simply shut off the lights and fall asleep.

Talk to your doctor about potential sleeping issues before they snowball into an issue concerning your eyesight.

Remember that your eyes are kept busy all day long doing their job, and sleeping is the only time that they really get a break. Make sure that they get the rest they deserve by making enough shut-eye a priority!

Exercises Can Smarten Up Your Eyesight

Eye-ExercisesYou don't need spectacles, lenses, even surgery. Easy-peasy exercises done daily can smarten up your eyesight, says a vision trainer.

Muscles need exercise
Constant exposure to pollution, harsh lights from tele vision and computer usage, poor sleeping and eating habits all come together to affect the health of our eyes.

Vision yoga exercises involve movements that massage the eye ball, work out muscles that control eye movement and provide relief to the overworked organ.

For your eyes only
Sun Swinging
Swing your body from side to side with your eyes shut in front of a light source or under the sun. Do this for 5 minutes. Benefits: It massages the eye ball

Pendulum exercise
Make the eye focus shift from side to side, tailing a moving object like a pendant on a chain.
Benefits: It works the oblique muscles and helps the lens focus

Snellen's chart
Read an alphabet chart, tracing a path across it.
Benefit: It improves the central fixation at distant objects

Eye wash
Place an eye cup filled with water, over your eyes and blink 10 times.
Benefit: It tones voluntary and involuntary muscles
Swing Focus on a ball that's being pulled towards you and pushed away.
Benefits: It strengthens eye muscles.

Human eye is an amazing organ that most of us rely on every waking moment of the day.

Banish the Bags Under Your Eyes

Banish the Bags Under Your EyesTired of being told you look tired? Here's how to get rid of eye bags, puffiness, dark shadows, and circles.
Seasonal allergies, a cold, a sinus infection: These are some of the things that can lead to water building up under the eye.

Addressing the underlying cause will help treat these temporary eruptions of puffiness.
  • Treat hay fever, if that's the problem.
  • Try a neti pot.
  • Switch your sleep position.
Other everyday habits, including rubbing your eyes frequently, going to bed with makeup on, and excessive drinking, can contribute to under-eye bags, too.  Heavy alcohol drinking causes dehydration . That weakens the delicate skin around the eyes, making it more likely to sink into a pouch.

Eye bags are very common, and are usually not related to your health. But if your bags appear suddenly and you're not suffering from allergies, a sinus infection, or a cold -- and they don't ease up when you try the lifestyle steps mentioned above -- it's a good idea to see your doctor.

Seven Eye Health Problems You Didn’t Know

seven health problems that an eye doctor can spot firstYour eyes are a window into your overall health, and it’s important to get your eyes checked even if you don’t think you have vision problems.

The seven health problems that an eye doctor can spot first
1. Diabetes: A routine eye exam can detect blood and other yellowish fluids seeping out of fragile and miniscule vessels in the retinas.

2. Cancer: Skin cancer can also be detected through an eye exam, as lesions called basal cell carcinomas can show up on the eyelid and can possibly spread to the brain through the eye.

3. Hypertension: Bleeding in new blood vessels in the eye and bends or kinks in the vessels which normally run straight to the retina, which may be signs of high blood pressure.

4. Autoimmune Disorders: A routine eye exam can detect an inflammation of the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye, which may be a sign of Lupus or other autoimmune disorders.

5. High Cholesterol: A yellow ring around the cornea, which can be an indicator of high cholesterol: putting you at risk for heart attack or stroke.

6. Thyroid Disease: Bulging of the eyes, which is one of the symptoms of Grave’s Disease – a disorder characterized by an overactive thyroid.

7. Tumors: A visit to the eye doctor can reveal that you have droopy eyelids and pupils that aren’t the same size, which can point to tumors in the neck or even possible aneurysms.

Women Should Be Concerned About Eye Health

1. Dry Eyes

Shift Your Focus to Eye Health In The Digital Age

Shift Your Focus to Eye Health In The Digital AgeThe eyes have it — strain, that is. As our enthusiasm for using computers, tablets and phones grows, our eyes are paying the price.

Upward of 90 percent of computer and device users experience a problem so common there’s a name for it: computer vision syndrome (CVS). CVS comes with symptoms such as decreased or blurred vision, burning or stinging eyes, sensitivity to light, headaches, and back and neck pain.

1. Adjust your viewing angle
The best angle, the center of the monitor, tablet or phone should be 20 to 28 inches from your eyes and 4 to 5 inches below eye level.

2. Reduce glare
Position your screen to avoid glare from overhead lights or windows.

3. Rest your eyes
Every 20 minutes, look away from your computer and look at a distant object for 20 seconds.

4. Blink often
To reduce the risk of dry eye, remind yourself to blink more often. And refresh your eyes periodically with lubricating eye drops.

5. Get your eyes checked
Uncorrected vision problems — farsightedness or astigmatism, problems focusing or coordinating the eyes and changes associated with aging — can contribute to eyestrain and musculoskeletal pain.
Even if you don’t need glasses or contacts for daily activities, you may need them for computer or device use. If you do wear glasses or contacts and need to tilt your head or lean toward the screen to see it clearly, your lens prescription may need to be adjusted.

Eat Grapes for Super Eye Health

Eat Grapes for Super Eye HealthApart from other health benefits, do you know that grapes can work in multiple ways to promote your eye health?

Grapes promote eye health from signaling changes at the cellular level to directly countering oxidative stress.

The researchers investigated (Abigail Hackam from University of Miami, Florida) whether a diet supplemented with grapes could protect the photoreceptors in mice with retinal degeneration. The retina is the part of the eye that contains the cells that respond to light, known as photoreceptors.

Grape consumption also protected retinal function in an oxidative stress model of degeneration.
Further analysis revealed that the grape diet resulted in lower levels of inflammatory proteins and higher amounts of protective proteins in the retinas.
