Protect Your Child’s Eye From The Winter Sun

Protect Your Child’s Eye From The Winter SunWinter fun is great for the whole family. Quality time, exercise, and fresh air are just a few of the wonderful things about wintertime. Do you know that the winter sun is just as dangerous as the summer sun where your vision is concerned? Your kids are especially at risk, so here are some children’s eye care tips to protect your little ones.

Protective Eyewear

The sun’s rays are warming and delightful, but the UV rays emitted are dangerous. Winter does not lessen the problem, and may actually make it worse under certain conditions. Reflections of UV rays off snow or water amplify the hazard since it then comes from multiple directions. Eyes are vulnerable to these rays and can suffer a sunburn-like condition called Photokeratitis. Incredibly painful, photokeratitis is easy to prevent. Ensuring that your child wears quality UV-blocking sunglasses is the first line of defense. If participating in winter sports, be sure that safety goggles (also UV-rated) are worn. Your children’s eye car specialist can help you select the right eyewear for the activity.

Hats

An extra layer of protection or an alternate plan is always a good thing. A brimmed or floppy hat serves well in blocking the sun and the UV rays that may sneak around your child’s sunglasses. It’s also usually easier to get a small child to wear a hat than sunglasses.

Indoor Time

At times, it may make sense to limit a child’s outdoor time during peak sunshine hours if other options aren’t feasible. Plan lots of indoor activities in advance should you need to move the fun inside.
Help protect your kids from painful sunburns and future problems by working with your children’s eye care provider. He or she can lead you to the right options for your children’s good eye health.

Some Common Eye Conditions

The eye is an extraordinary and intricate organ. Each eye contains more than twenty parts. Its function is highly specialized. There are numerous disorders and diseases of the eye, some common, some rare. Many vision problems can be corrected with eyeglasses, others cannot. Following is information on some of the more common eye conditions.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD):

The macula is in the center of the retina, located at the back of the eye. It allows perception of fine detail. AMD destroys sharp central vision, such as that needed for reading and driving.

AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 60. It is painless, and can cause a slow or rapid decrease in vision. Risk factors include age, smoking history, obesity, race (most common in Caucasians), and gender (more common in women).

There is no current medical treatment for dry AMD; use of aids, such as (prescription eyeglasses) that magnify print, can be helpful.

Posterior Vitreous Degeneration (PVD):

The vitreous is the clear jelly-like substance that fills the eye between the lens and the retina. It is 99 percent water, 1 percent collagen. The vitreous is attached to the retina.

There is no treatment for PVD; eventually the brain adapts to the floaters and people adjust to them. It does not cause permanent sight loss, though it can lead to retinal detachment if the vitreous pulls hard enough to tear the retina. Retinal detachment is treated separately from PVD (see below).

Glaucoma
The optic nerve is attached to the back of the eye near the macula, the center of the retina. It is responsible for sending electrical impulses to the brain to form images when light enters the retina.
In order for the eye to retain its shape, it needs to maintain a certain amount of pressure. As people age, pressure changes can occur and/or the optic nerve can weaken. When the optic nerve is damaged at the point where it leaves the eye, glaucoma occurs.

Treatment for glaucoma consists of reducing the pressure in the eye and increasing blood supply to the optic nerve. Eye drops are commonly used, and may be followed by laser therapy, or trabeculectomy. Treatment cannot restore vision loss that has already occurred, but can slow down or prevent further loss of sight.

Cataracts
The crystalline lens of the eye is a clear capsule-like bag that hangs behind the iris. It focuses light on the retina, so the retina can transmit visual images to the brain.

Cataracts can be removed with surgery, a quick, painless procedure accomplished under local anesthetic. The clouded lens is removed and replaced with a small plastic lens. Follow-up treatment includes a series of eye drops to facilitate healing.

Uveitis
The uvea is the inner layer, between the sclera (at the front of the eye) and retina (at the back of the eye), comprised of the iris, the choroid, and the ciliary body. The uvea supplies blood to the retina.
Uveitis can be caused by many things: a viral infection, a fungal infection, a parasite, trauma to the eye, or it can be related to an autoimmune condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis.

Treatment varies depending on the cause and other underlying conditions, but includes corticosteroids, eye drops, pain relief, treatment of disease, and prevention of vision loss. While the infection is treated, it is best to wear (eye glasses) rather than contact lenses.

Different Parts Of Eyeglasses

Different Parts To EyeglassesThe frames of the eyeglasses contain parts that can be replaced and repaired. Additionally, you should carefully consider the lenses, as well as the frames, when you purchase your eyeglasses. These two separate components allow you to choose from several combinations to make your eyeglasses uniquely yours.

When you pick out your eyeglasses, you may be most concerned with choosing the frames for the eyeglasses. The frames affect the way you look. Frames allow you to express your style. You may choose to go with designer frames, such as (Calvin Klein eyeglass frames), or a more traditional frame. Often, you will have a frame allowance with your eye insurance that will cover the cost of the frames up to a certain amount, and then you can make up the difference.

When you are choosing a good eye glass frame for yourself, you should consider both the color and style of the frame. Take a trusted friend with you. She can be a sounding board to help you find a frame that fits your personality. As you look at your frames, consider how you will be using them. You may consider getting the twistable frames for small children, or if you have small children at home. This will keep your frames from becoming crooked or breaking.

When you purchase your frames, you should consider how well and easily they can be repaired. You can replace the nose pads on your frames easily. The parts are not expensive, and most eyeglass shops will make the repairs for you for free. Additionally, you can have the temple pieces replaced if they break. The temple pieces are the pieces that go along your temples and over your ears. They may also have earpieces that slip on over the part that touches your ears. If these break, then you can order replacement parts and have them fixed. The bridge of your eyeglasses is the piece that goes across your nose. Usually, if this piece breaks you will need to replace the entire frame.

When you order your lenses, you have many different options available to you. The lenses that you choose will affect how your frames look. They can also affect the heaviness of your glasses.  You can also have the edges shined to a gloss, or the edges beveled down. Additionally, you can have the glasses treated with material to prevent glare or scratches. This can help prolong the life of your lenses.

Taking care of your glasses properly is important to maintain all the parts of the glasses. You should use a case to store your glasses in. Additionally, you can purchase a special lens cleaning cloth and spray that will prevent your lenses from scratching. Finally, it is always nice to have an eyeglasses repair kit on hand to help you in an emergency. These things will help to take care of all the parts of your eyeglasses.

Eyeglass Frame Material Causes Allergic Reaction

http://glassescrafter.com/information/Frame-Materials-and-Allergies.htmlIt is uncommon to have an allergic reaction to eyeglasses, and when it happens it can be difficult to find help and support from your eye doctor. However, if you know you have allergies to specific types of materials, then you should find out what your glasses are made out of before you order them. This can be difficult because many manufacturers do not list all of the materials in the glasses.

If you think you are having an allergic reaction to your glasses, you need to track your symptoms and isolate it to your glasses. One of the major signs is that the skin is irritated only where your eyeglasses are, or where they touch your skin. You may develop a masklike rash around your eyes, or you may just have spots where your glasses actually touch the skin. The symptoms are different for everyone.

Some people have an allergic reaction to the eyeglass frames.
1). Nickel allergy: This causes a rash in the area that comes in contact with the glasses. If you have an allergy to nickel you should try to purchase plastic frames or frames made of titanium.
http://glassescrafter.com/information/Frame-Materials-and-Allergies.htmlTitanium glasses are the best choice for people with allergies, but if it does not work for you then try the plastic glasses.

Stainless steel glasses also work for people with a nickel allergy. Some people do have a difficult time with plastic glasses as well. The cheap eyeglasses are often made from nickel, especially the ones that you purchase at a drugstore. You may consider going in for allergy testing if you are having a difficult time finding a frame that works for you.

2). Nose pads: These are usually made out of silicone. The main indicator of a specific nose pad allergy would be that the rash is focused around your nose where the pads touch your face. These can be replaced with vinyl nose pads, and any eyeglasses shop can special order the correct pads for your glasses. Another option is to look for frames that do not use nose pads. However, if you have an allergy to the metal, this might not be the best option for you to consider.

3). Chemical coatings: Some people may have reactions to the chemical coatings that are on the lenses of the glasses. A sign of this would be constant eye irritation, and no reaction on your ears or along your temples. If this is the case, you may consider ordering glasses without the additional coatings added to them. This would mean avoiding the scratch resistant and glare blocker coatings. You may also try to find someone that will make glasses for you from actual glass.

Protect Your Eyes From Computer Radiation

Eye fatigue is often experienced by many people when they are using computers every day. Staring at a computer constantly can make eyes dry, especially in rooms with air conditioning.
Researchers have found an easy way to cope with tired eyes from too long looking at a computer, which they call a ‘20-20-20-20’ strategy, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The trick is to blink 20 times for 20 minutes. Then keep the view of the computer for 20 seconds and focus the view on an object that is 20 feet or about six feet.

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is characterized by dry eyes and fatigue, headache, stiff neck and muscle. This is usually a temporary problem, but it can be very annoying when it happens every day.
Those with the highest risk are people who spend more than three hours in front of a computer. CVS can be very annoying and painful, as well as making myopic eyes.

People who spend a lot of time in front of the computer are at risk. However, a higher risk is in employees, because currently most offices have air conditioning, which make the room dry and cold. Air conditioning that is comfortable for the body, has a negative effect on the eyes.
All the people who spend a lot of time in front of computers, especially employees sh
ould use these 20-20-20-20 strategies every day. Using eye drops before work is also recommended, but it’s better if you frequently look away from the computer.
