Nearsightedness

nearsightednessNearsightedness -- or myopia -- affects a significant number of people. But this eye disorder is easily corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery.
People with myopia or nearsightedness have difficulty seeing distant objects, but can clearly see objects that are near. For example, a person who is nearsighted may not be able to make out highway signs until they are just a few feet away.

What Causes Nearsightedness?
People who are nearsighted have what is called a refractive error. In nearsighted people, the eyeball is too long or the cornea has too much curvature, so the light entering the eye is not focused correctly. Images focus in front of the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye, rather than directly on the retina, causing blurred vision.
Nearsightedness runs in families and usually appears in childhood. Usually the condition plateaus, but it can worsen with age.

What Are the Symptoms of Nearsightedness?
People who are nearsighted often complain of headaches, eyestrain, squinting, or fatigue when driving, playing sports, or looking more than a few feet away. Children commonly complain of not being able to see the board at school.

 How Is Nearsightedness Diagnosed?
Nearsightedness can be easily diagnosed using standard eye exams given by an eye doctor.
How Is Nearsightedness Treated?

Glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery can correct nearsightedness. With myopia, your prescription for glasses or contact lenses is a negative number, such as -3.00. The higher the number, the stronger your lenses will be. The prescription helps the eye focus light on the retina, clearing up the vision.

The only way to correct nearsightedness is to wear corrective glasses, contact lenses are surgery. It’s important to book an eye exam for your child if you’re worried as nearsightedness is linked to serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and retina detachment.

The Value of Safety Eyewear: At Work, At Home and At Play

Every year, approximately 2.4 million eye injuries occur in the U.S., both in and outside the workplace. It's estimated that nearly 50,000 of those victims lost some degree of their eyesight. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), ninety (90%) of eye injuries could have been prevented by safety eyewear. Eye injuries can happen anywhere – at work, at home or at play. Safety eyewear is the first and foremost form of protection against them

At Work

Eye hazards exist within many workplace settings and the most common eye injuries are caused by particles or objects, such as glass or dust, striking or scraping the eye. While 61 percent of eye injuries occur in manufacturing, construction or trade jobs, they are also common in offices, hospitals and laboratories.

  • Non-prescription and prescription safety glasses: These are mostly used for protection from dust, chips or flying particles. Side shields and wraparound-style safety glasses provide additional protection from dangers in the periphery.
  • Goggles: These provide a protective shield around the eyes to secure against many hazards, including impact, dust and chemical splashes.
  • Face shields and helmets: Usually for welding or working with molten materials, face shields and helmets protect from heat, chemical or blood borne pathogens should be used in conjunction with safety glasses or goggles.

If a need for safety eyewear exists, employers must provide individually sized and fitted safety eyeglasses to each employee. They should also enforce its use.

At Home

The majority of eye injuries happen at home, often during lawn work or in the kitchen, resulting in abrasions, lacerations, or other eye irritations.

At Play

Eye injuries can occur in most any sport but are common in baseball and racquet sports, which involve flying objects at high speeds. Many eye injuries also occur during contact sports like basketball and ice hockey. Safety eyewear is especially important in paintball.

20/20 Eyeglass Superstore's eye care professional is well versed in the safety eyewear options. Drop into 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore for all your child’s eye care needs. We have a frame for every face and a price for any budget. We also have Independent Optometrists located on site who will be happy to examine your vision.
  • All safety eyewear should be made of polycarbonate lenses which provide the highest level of impact protection (as well as ultraviolet protection, which is a plus on the sports field).
  • Safety eyewear used in sports.
  • Allow time to adjust to your safety eyewear.
  • Keep the eyewear on at all times during the activity.

Your eyes are complex and delicate organs. We don't always notice the risks that many day-to-day activities pose. Using safety eyewear can significantly decrease your risks of suffering a devastating eye injury.

Tips to Promote Your Child’s Vision

Tips to Promote Your Child’s Vision

August as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month to Educate Parents, Teacherson Importance of Healthy Vision for Kids

As many children begin to head back to school after the summer break, We hopes to help educate parents and educators on the importance of children’s vision.
As you prepare your child for the new school year, have you thought about how to protect his or her vision?  Additionally, August was deemed Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month to inspire parents to make their children’s eye health a priority.

According to the recent “Cost of Vision Problems: The Economic Burden of Vision Loss and Eye Disorders in the United States” study vision disorders in children ages 0-17 cost Americans more than $5.7 billion in direct and indirect costs. Fortunately, eye problems such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) can be successfully treated if detected early.

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety month to inspire parents to make their child’s vision health a priority.

Here are three tips on how to protect your children’s vision for the new school year:

1.  Take your child to an eye doctor before the school year begins. Make an appointment with your optometrist to have your child’s eyes checked, or have their prescription updated. Eye problems such as lazy eye and crossed eyes can be treated if detected early. If you don’t have a regular eye doctor, feel free to drop by any 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore location. No appointment is necessary either, all we ask is that you come in 20 minutes earlier than your desired appointment time to fill out the required paperwork.

2. Keep your child’s eyes safe from the sun.

3. Take special care of your child’s eyeglasses.

Overall, there are three key things you can do to protect your child’s vision for the new school year: take your child to the optometrist, keep their eyes safe from the sun and take special care of their eyeglasses. Do you have any tips to add?

Protect Your Eyes From Computer Radiation

Eye fatigue is often experienced by many people when they are using computers every day. Staring at a computer constantly can make eyes dry, especially in rooms with air conditioning.
Researchers have found an easy way to cope with tired eyes from too long looking at a computer, which they call a ‘20-20-20-20’ strategy, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The trick is to blink 20 times for 20 minutes. Then keep the view of the computer for 20 seconds and focus the view on an object that is 20 feet or about six feet.

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is characterized by dry eyes and fatigue, headache, stiff neck and muscle. This is usually a temporary problem, but it can be very annoying when it happens every day.
Those with the highest risk are people who spend more than three hours in front of a computer. CVS can be very annoying and painful, as well as making myopic eyes.

People who spend a lot of time in front of the computer are at risk. However, a higher risk is in employees, because currently most offices have air conditioning, which make the room dry and cold. Air conditioning that is comfortable for the body, has a negative effect on the eyes.
All the people who spend a lot of time in front of computers, especially employees sh
ould use these 20-20-20-20 strategies every day. Using eye drops before work is also recommended, but it’s better if you frequently look away from the computer.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Did you know that everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens? Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which the optic nerve is damaged leading to progressive, irreversible vision loss if left untreated.  Some forms of glaucoma have virtually no symptoms.

Glaucoma has been called the "silent thief of sight" because the loss of vision often occurs gradually over a long period of time, and symptoms only occur when the disease is quite advanced. Once lost, vision cannot normally be recovered, so treatment is aimed at preventing further loss. Glaucoma is the second-most common cause of blindness after cataracts, in the United States. If the condition is detected early enough, it is possible to arrest the development or slow the progression with medical and surgical means.

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, everyone is at risk for glaucoma.  However, the following groups of people have been identified to be at a higher risk for developing glaucoma:
1.       People over 60.
2.       Family Members with Glaucoma.
3.       Hispanics in Older Age Groups
4.       African Americans and people of African descent.
5.       People of Asian descent, especially those of Japanese descent.
6.       Steroid Users like those who require approximately 14 to 35 puffs per day of steroid inhaler to control severe asthma.
7.       Those with eye injury. The glaucoma can occur immediately after the injury or years later. The most common cause is sports-related injuries such as baseball or boxing.
