Age-Related Eye Diseases

Age-Related Eye DiseasesWe seem resigned to the idea that as we age, we will have trouble getting around, become hard of hearing, and begin to not see too well. Leading eye care researchers and clinicians, though, are calling for a shift in the way we think of vision and aging. The fact is, low vision can often be delayed or prevented with appropriate screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
You can’t control the passage of time, but you can do a great deal to preserve your sight as you age:
  • Be aware of your risk factors. You need to know what genetic factors, lifestyle choices, diseases, and exposures place you in a higher risk category for certain diseases so that you and your vision care provider can adjust your screening intervals accordingly.
  • Have a baseline eye exam at age 40 if you are an adult with no risk factors for cataracts, glaucoma, AMD, or diabetic retinopathy. People who have no vision problems or obvious risk factors should have a baseline eye examination at age 40, to establish a standard against which future exam results can be compared.
  • Get screened earlier or more frequently screening if you have risk factors for cataracts, glaucoma, AMD, or diabetic retinopathy. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease, for example, or if you fall into a high-risk ethnic group, you should receive thorough eye examinations more often. Click on the links above for lists of risk factors and recommended screening intervals.
  • Cooperate with your vision care provider. This advice applies to examinations, preventive measures, treatment, and follow-up care. If you have diabetes, for example, you should have a comprehensive dilated eye examination annually. If you have glaucoma, you should use your eye drops daily as prescribed. If you have AMD and your provider has asked you to test your vision with an Amsler grid, you should do so every day. After cataract surgery, you should wear your eye shield and use your antibiotics as your provider has instructed.
  • Listen to your body and report any new symptoms promptly to your vision care provider. If your vision changes, especially if you have AMD or diabetic retinopathy, tell your provider immediately.

This prevents your eyes from becoming over strained and helps rest overtired eyes. Take a few minutes to close your eyes and relax them. See (Computer Eye Strain).

  • Wear eye protection when biking or engaging in other vigorous activity that might result in inadvertent injury to your eye.
  • Splash cool water on your eyes periodically during the day to help relax them and reduce puffiness.
  • Avoid using heavy creams around the eye area, which may result in irritation or become too pasty.
  • Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands, which can lead to infections including conjunctivitis.
  • Consider replacing old eye make up or foundation every few months to keep the eye area clean and infection free.
  • Always remove any make up or sunscreen from around the eye area before going to sleep at night.

If you wear glasses or contacts, you’ve probable looked at your prescription at least once and wondered what it all means. The terminology is meant for those in the industry. While optometrists and ophthalmologists may understand the language on a prescription for glasses or contacts, it often helps to know what the words mean for your own understanding.
To help clear up any confusion regarding what your eyeglasses prescription really means, it is important to understand a few basic words and abbreviations that can be found on the prescription. It may look a bit daunting, but understanding your eyeglasses prescription is easier than you might have thought.
The two most important of these mystery terms and abbreviations are OD (Oculus Dextrus) and OS (Oculus Sinister). These are Latin terms that mean right eye and left eye, respectively.

Listed after these OD and OS abbreviations are numbers preceded by either a plus sign (+) or a minus sign (-). A plus sign indicates that the designated eye is farsighted, while a minus sign indicates that the designated eye is nearsighted. This is measured in diopters, the unit of measurement that indicates the nearsightedness or farsightedness of the eye. Diopters are normally abbreviated to a simple D, so an OD -1.25 indicates that a patient is one and one quarter of a diopter farsighted in their right eye.

Having to get glasses or contact lenses can be frustrating enough, but when you don’t understand the prescription, it can be extremely frustrating. Understanding your prescription is important, and is made easy by grasping these few basic concepts. The next time your eye doctor gives you a prescription for new glasses, you will know what to expect.

Low Vision Is a Visual Impairment

Low Vision Is a Visual ImpairmentLow vision is a visual impairment, not total vision blindness, which results in a permanent decrease in the acuity of an individual's vision field. Unlike normal vision impairments such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, low vision can't be fully corrected by using standard vision aids such as eyeglasses or contacts. According to the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI), an individual has low vision when "the better-seeing eye will not reach visual acuity of 20/70 or greater after the strongest correction aid is applied".
Common conditions that result in low vision include cataracts, stroke, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment. The five most common types of low vision, as defined by the American Optometric Association/1, are as follows:
  • Loss of Central Vision
  • Loss of Peripheral (Side) Vision
  • Night Blindness
  • Blurred Vision
Early warning signs of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects up close or at a distance, differentiating between colors, and overall blurry vision. Individuals, through their primary eye care provider, should contact a Low Vision Eye Care Specialist who can perform a unique eye examination called a low vision evaluation. This type of examination involves a multitude of tests that assess the range of the vision field, ocular perception and sensitivity, assessment of any ocular injury or disease, and overall mobility of the eye. After this series of tests, the low vision specialist will perform tests with various telescopic and magnification aids to determine which low vision aid will provide the best visual field enhancement.

Healthy Eyes During Pregnancy

Eyes may change somewhat during pregnancy due to fluid retention, increased blood volume, hormonal fluctuations and other physical shifts that are part of pregnancy. Usually these changes are temporary and resolve after the baby is born, or after weaning a breast-fed child. Vision changes tend to be minor and don’t require a new eyeglass prescription. LASIK surgery should not be done when a woman is pregnant or breastfeeding.

Healthy Eyes During Pregnancy

What to Look For

A condition known as dry eye may result from hormonal fluctuations. Talk to your Eye M.D. about lubricating drops and other treatments that are safe during pregnancy. Wearing contact lenses may be less comfortable when dry eye is present. Eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EFA), such as salmon, flax seeds and walnuts, may help resolve dry eye and also supports general good health.

If vision becomes very blurry, it may signal high blood pressure or pregnancy-related diabetes. Contact your doctor right away.

Visiting your local optometrist allows doctors to look directly at your blood vessels which can reveal early warning signs of serious health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes before the symptoms show up anywhere else in the body.

Children and Myopia

Depending on your health and age, you should also visit the optometrist to make sure you are above driving standards. Sometimes people won’t even realize they have blurred vision as deterioration tends to happen quite slowly over time. Driving standards are very strict and you might be driving illegally without even knowing it! If you were involved in a car accident and your vision was found to be below the legal standard, your insurance might be void. This is a worst case scenario but it’s better to be safe than sorry!
Children Myopia

A visit to the optometrist can also let you know if you have a lazy eye. This is especially important for children, so if you are a parent or guardian, make sure you take your kids in for regular eye exams. Check out our post on Top 5 Tips on Choosing Children’s Eyeglasses for more information on bring your kids to the optometrist.

How to Tell if Your Eyes Are Going Bad

Before you panic about your eyesight, get them checked and then go from there. Just because you feel like they are, you might just have tired eyes.
  1. Get your eyes tested regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Once a year is standard. If any of the following are a problem, you may wish to schedule an appointment sooner.
  2. Look at an object that is far away that you tend to see a lot. If it looks blurrier than you remember, or you just think you have trouble seeing things you once could see easily, your eyes probably aren't as good as they used to be.
  3. Look really closely at something. A book or newspaper will work. If you have trouble reading the print, your eyes probably aren't as good as they used to be. But this is true only if you at one point were able to read the print, obviously.
  4. If step two or three caused you to second guess your sight, go to an eye care professional for an eye exam. They can tell you for sure if you need to start wearing glasses. If you have any doubt in your mind, go just in case.
  6. Follow their instructions.
    7. Do you suffer from regular headaches and wonder what the cause is? You should visit your optometrist! A large percentage of headaches are caused by visual problems and most general practitioners will recommend you get your eyes tested to see if that is the problem.

Read the orignal article on wikihow.com
We hope this article has inspired you to visit your local optometrist. Your vision is priceless and a thirty minute appointment once a year is certainly something you should be able to commit too. Getting your eyes tested regularly will help you stay on top of your general health, eye diseases and even headaches!
