Vision Loss and Depression

Vision Loss and DepressionPeople with depression are more likely to have self-reported vision loss, according to the study.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 10,000 adults aged 20 and older, the rate of depression was about 11 percent among people with self-reported vision loss and about 5 percent among those who did not report vision loss, according to the study, which was published online March 7 in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology.

After accounting for a number of factors -- including age, sex and general health -- the study concluded there was a significant association between self-reported vision loss and depression.
"Better recognition of depression among people reporting reduced ability to perform routine activities of daily living due to vision loss is warranted," they concluded.

Depression can feel overwhelming but it should not be ignored, accepted or expected to go away on its own. It's a treatable medical condition. Know the signs and take them seriously.
A person with vision loss becomes depressed seems more related to the impact the vision loss has on a person's functioning rather than to the actual severity of vision loss.

If you or someone you know is feeling depressed or down, seek help from a medical or mental health professional. Don't ignore symptoms or expect them to go away on their own. Depression is a treatable medical condition by taking precaution and Medical treatment you can save your precious Vision.

4 Easy Ways To Clean Your EyeGlasses

Clean You EyeglassEye glasses constantly need cleaning if they are not to impair eyesight with greasy fingerprints, dust, spots and other miscellaneous material that seems to be drawn to glasses. Glasses are sold in a case usually with a polishing cloth for a quick polish during the day but from time to time a more thorough clean is recommended.

Almost 50% of Americans wear prescription glasses and most of them are guilty of not knowing how to clean their glasses correctly. Here’s 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore® suggest's Four different ways you can clean your glasses the right way every time:

The Cleaner Method
First rinse your glasses to ensure that any particles do not scratch the glasses.
Use an eyeglass spray or cleaner and with a cloth over either side of the glasses, rub over the glass lens and the frame with the cleaner.

The Rinse Method
Rinse the lenses under warm running water. Add a spot or two of mild soap, liquid soap or dish washing liquid to your fingertips and work over the lenses to break up any greasy deposits.
Using circular motions to remove the soap, rinse the glasses under running water.
If the glasses are truly clean there will be very little water left on the lenses. Dry the lenses and frames with a clean soft cloth.

The Dunk Method
Fill a sink with warm soapy water. Dunk the glasses and swish them around. Rinse the glasses under running water. Shake to remove excess water and dry using a soft cloth.

Cleaning Eye Glasses with Vinegar
Try cleaning your glasses with vinegar from time to time. Just rub a couple of spots of vinegar onto each lens and wipe off with a soft cloth.
The acetic acid in the vinegar dissolves grease, oil from your skin and stuck-on dirt, leaving your glasses streak free and shining.

Vinegar does not discolor the lenses like ammonia-based cleaners, it is environmentally friendly and there are no harsh chemical smells and irritants to contend with.

Protecting Vision in the Workplace

Protect Your Eyes While WorkingThe use of digital devices, including personal computers, tablets and cell phones, continues to increase.  And, the impact of prolonged usage can often be felt in the eye.  In fact, because of extended use of these devices, close to 70 percent of American adults experience some form of digital eyestrain, according to a new report from The Vision Council.  Symptoms of digital eyestrain can include dry eyes, blurred vision and headaches.
Our goal is to provide employers and employees with free information on topics ranging from eyestrain to industrial eye safety in order to promote eye health at work.

Office workers can take a few simple steps to help prevent eyestrain and fatigue.  20/20 EyeGlass Superstore suggest's:
  • Visit an eye doctor for a dilated eye exam to make sure you are seeing clearly and to detect any potential vision issues.
  • Place your screen 20 to 26 inches away from your eyes and a little bit below eye level.
  • Use a document holder placed next to your computer screen. It should be close enough so you don’t have to swing your head back and forth or constantly change your eye focus.
  • Adjust the text size on the screen to a comfortable level.
  • Change your lighting to lower glare and harsh reflections. Glare filters over your computer screen can also help.
  • Use a chair you can adjust.
  • Choose screens that can tilt and swivel. A keyboard that you can adjust is also helpful.
  • The Vision Council recommends the 20-20-20 break:  every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
Here at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, we’re concerned with keeping our Orlando patients’ vision as healthy as possible. We also want you and your family to have healthy eyes.

Your vision is priceless and it is important that you maintain your visual wellness by scheduling a yearly comprehensive eye exam with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Drop into 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore for all your eye care needs.

We also strongly recommends the use of eye protection in the workplace, especially in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or any profession where eye accidents and injuries may occur.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2012, there were 20,300 recorded occupational eye injuries that resulted in days away from work.

How to Get Glasses You'll Love

For most people, a trip to the eye doctor comes every two years. (Though for certain conditions, you may have to go more often). If your exam shows that your eye glasses prescription hasn't changed, you may opt to just keep your old frames and go on your merry way.

How to Get Glasses You'll Love No matter what the situation is, you should keep in mind several things before you make your final selection.

Questions to ask yourself when choosing eye glass frames:
  • Will I be wearing these frames every day, for sports, for fun or for work?
  • Am I choosing a frame that might appeal to me now because I am feeling funky, but will seem loud and garish when it is time to wear them to the office?
  • What am I going to do with my current frames?
  • How long will I have to wait before replacing these frames if I do decide I hate them?
  • Is there a satisfaction guarantee?
Satisfaction guaranteed
Many eyeglass stores have a satisfaction guarantee which allows you to get the glasses, wear them for a day and then bring them back if you're not happy with them. Sure, the color of those frames was great on the day you tried them on, but now in the bright light of the sun, you look freakish and you just want to get them as far from you as possible. However, make sure that you understand the full details before you make your purchase, because there might be restrictions in the fine print.
You’ll always save money when you visit 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore as well. Here are our current eyeglass discounts: Share the buy-one-get-one-free with a friend or family and we’ll pay for the eye exam, a six month supply of Acuvue Oasys contact lenses for $119, two pairs of super strong light weight polycarbonate lenses plus two frames for $149 and we’ll pay for the eye exam and get a new look for the new year with 20-25% off the buy-one-get-one-free offer and we’ll pay for your eye exam or give you an in-store. credit.
Choosing the right place to buy your glasses
While many people just buy their glasses right from their optometrist’s office, some may opt to take their prescription to an eyeglass shop.

Do a little research first, and have some frame names and prices on hand so that you can do some comparison shopping. In addition, make sure that the salesperson is willing to help you make decisions about fit and function and not just focused on the ringing of the cash register. Look for a place that is well lit with lots of mirrors as well as access to a window so that you can get an idea of what the frames look like in natural light.

We’re known for our tagline, “A frame for every face and a price for any budget”, and we look forward to seeing you as soon as possible to help you with all your eyeglass purchase needs.

Eye Stretching Techniques

Eye Stretching TechniquesYour body gets tired after a long day at work and so do your eyes. Stretches are a great way to get your body feeling better. Many people do not know that you can also stretch the eyes. Here is some more information about eye stretches and some simple stretching exercises that you can try today.

Why Are Eye Stretches Needed?
Your body needs rest and recovery to avoid being injured by repetitive tasks. In fact it is recommended that people take a 10 minute break to stretch and recover for every hour they work. This isn’t always possible, but you can always find a few minutes to spare. Eye stretches are quick and easy. When you take time to stretch your eyes you can reduce eye strain which will make it easier, and more comfortable, to use your computer screen at work for long periods of time.

A Few Eye Stretching Techniques
ust like any stretching exercise, a little goes a long way. You don’t have to stretch your eyes for long periods of time for the stretching to be effective.

Warm Up and Relax
Eye stretching will work best when you are relaxed. Before stretching, take a few minutes to rest your eyes. Close your eyes and breathe deeply for several seconds. This will remoisten your eyes which is important as people generally blink less frequently when using the computer.
Lens Focusing Stretch
One way to relieve eye strain is to work the muscles that focus the lens inside of your eye. This can be accomplished by having your eye focus on objects at different distances from the eye. Hold your finger in front of your fact and focus on it at different distances. Focus on your finger near your face and then focus on your finger far from your face. Repeat a few times. After you finish this stretch take a few long blinks to refresh the eyes. The great thing about this stretch is that it is easy to do anywhere. You always have your finger with you and can do this stretch while sitting at a desk, while riding in an elevator or when taking a quick break. This is an easy way to rejuvenate your eyes and to relieve eyestrain.

Up and Down Eye Movement
This exercise will help strengthen the muscles that move the eye. It is best completed while sitting down. Hold your head still in a forward facing, neutral position. Then move your eyes upward.

Side to Side Stretch
This eye stretch is also very easy to do while sitting at a desk. Move your eyes and look to the top corner of your visual field. Wait a few seconds. Then you should move your eyes to the bottom corner of your visual field (on the opposite side). Wait a few seconds and then complete this stretch again using the other corners of the eye.

Flax Seed is Good For Eye Health

Flax SeedWouldn't it be great if taking care of your eyes was as easy as taking a daily supplement? Recent research suggests that daily consumption of essential fatty acids including those found in flax seed oil and fish oil provide many health promoting benefits, including reducing your risk of eye disease and promoting better vision.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are not just important or essential for your eye health. They are essential for your overall health and well being. Deficiencies in essential fatty acids can lead to a host of problems including cardiovascular disease, skin disorders and allergies, nervous system disorders and more.

There are other types of fatty acids including omega-6s and omega-9s. Most people get far too many of these in their diet however, and not nearly enough omega-3s. That is why it is often necessary to take a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids.

What Is Flaxseed Oil and How Can It Help Me?
Flaxseed oil is a dietary supplement. It comes from a natural flowering plant and is often recommended for improving the health and well being of our bodies in general. It is one of the richest sources of natural omega-3 fatty acids found in nature.

Omega-3 fatty acids are important for promoting our eye health and well being. Some studies have linked omega-3 supplementation with a decreased risk in eye diseases including age related macular degeneration.

There are other types of fatty acids including omega-6s and omega-9s. Most people get far too many of these in their diet however, and not nearly enough omega-3s. That is why it is often necessary to take a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids.

Fatty Acids and Dry Eye Syndrome
Even more recent research suggests supplementation with 1000 mg of Omega 3 supplement once or twice each day may help reduce dry eye syndrome in patients. People with dry eye syndrome do not produce enough tears. This can lead to irritation and inflammation as well as red eyes. While there are medications for dry eyes, there are also natural steps patients can take to improve their condition, including supplementation with omega 3 fatty acids.

Having Problems with Your Eyeglasses?

If you wear eyeglasses on a daily basis you want to make sure that your eyewear are the perfect match for your face and eyes. Having the wrong fit or prescription can make life a bit uncomfortable. You can find comfort in the fact that there are clear indicators if you’re having a problem with your eyeglasses. Here are some common things to be aware of:
Wrong Prescription:
  • Headaches
  • Fuzzy or blurry vision
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
These might be indicators that you need a new prescription for your eyeglass lenses. On the other hand, your glasses may have the correct prescription, but the lenses may need adjustments. The best thing to do is get your eyeglasses checked once a year to make sure you have the correct prescription and lenses are aligned properly.
Wrong Fit:
  • Your eyeglasses always sit too low or high on your face
  • You have pressure marks where the frames sit on your face
  • The temples and/or ear piecesfit too tightly on your head
If any of these issues seem familiar, you should get your eyeglasses checked and fitted. In many cases, you can visit your local eye doctor’s office, where a frame technician can adjust your eyeglasses for a better fit. In other cases, you may need to consider purchasing a new pair of frames better fitted for your face. Having a comfortable pair of glasses will make all the difference in your daily activities. Schedule an appointment today with your Optometric Associates eye doctor for an eye exam or eyeglass consultation. We look forward to seeing you!

Screening Tests to Diagnose Color Blindness

Color BlindnessWe often joke about being color blind, but in its truest sense it is a serious condition. Color deficiency, in which a person has difficulty distinguishing between colors, is a fairly common condition, though much more so in men. It is estimated that one in ten men and one in a hundred women have some form of color blindness. Total color blindness, where the person sees only in shades of gray, is fortunately very rare.

What is color deficiency?
The retina, which captures an image much like the film in a camera, is made up of layers of tissue and within them are photoreceptors called rods and cones. There are three types of cones responsible for color vision, and a deficiency will produce confusion between the colors. The most common forms of color blindness involve the red and/or green cones and cause difficulty differentiating between reds and greens. Color deficiency is usually hereditary and congenital but can also be the result of an accident or exposure to certain chemicals.

Diagnosing color blindness
Color Vision Test is a booklet of pages each with a circular pattern made up of colored dots in various colors, sizes and degrees of brightness. The colored dots are arranged so that a person with normal color vision will clearly see a number within the array of dots in a different color. A color blind person will either see a different number, or no number at all. The full test has 38 plates, but generally only 14 or 24 plates are used. The test is usually taken in normal room lighting with the patient wearing their normal eyeglasses, if needed. Note: this test is unsuitable for young children who can't accurately identify numbers.

Who should be screened for color blindness?
Anyone pursuing a profession which requires color accuracy should be screened for color blindness. This includes would-be electricians, commercial artists, designers, technicians, police officers, pilots and those interested in certain military careers, as safety and job performance can depend heavily upon accurate color perception.

Massage Techniques for Eye and Muscle Twitches

In most cases eye and muscle twitches are completely harmless. However, this doesn’t make them any less irritating.
Massage Techniques for Eye

What is Eye Twitching?
Eye twitching is when the muscles surrounding the eye or eyelids start to have involuntary spasms. The spasms typically last for a minute or two and then go away. They can continue to recur randomly for a period of a couple of days or even a few weeks.
Eye twitching isn’t generally indicative of a medical problem, but it can be brought on due to many common causes. Stress, fatigue, consuming too much caffeine, your genetics, a lack of sleep and even eye strain can contribute to eye twitching
Massage and the Eye
Massage can be very beneficial to many areas of the body including the eye. It has been shown to increase circulation and stimulate muscles. When used properly it can offer temporary relief from eye twitching in many cases and can help strengthen and tone the muscles that surround and support the eye.
Palm Rub
One of the simplest and most effective eye massage techniques is quite similar to rubbing your eyes. Simply place the heel of your hand over the eye, apply gentle pressure and then slowly twist the hand back and forth. This should be performed on both eyes, one eye at a time.
Resistance Training
Your eye can benefit from resistance training just as the rest of your body can. This technique uses a finger to provide a small amount of resistance to your eye. Close your eye and then place your index finger on the side of the eye closest to the side of your face. Then move your eyeball to the side as well.
Finger Eye Massage
This massage uses the thumb and index finger to massage the eyelid. Place one finger on the top eyelid and the other on the bottom. Then slowly massage the area.
Upward Edge of Eye Rub
This massage is performed using two fingers. Place each finger on opposite sides of one eye and then slowly move the fingers in an upward motion. This type of massage needs very little pressure. In fact just having your fingers placed on the skin should be pressure enough.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
When exercising and massaging the eye it is important to remember that a little massage goes a long way. Each of these techniques should be completed in a minute or two or much less. Always be gentle. Once you have finished it is a good idea to cleanse the eye area. Some find that an eye bath is a great way to end an eye massage.

eye-careWe are only born with one set of eyes, so it is vital we do our best to care for them in the best way possible. The sun, wind and environmental pollutants all pose potential dangers to our eyes each and every day.

Here are some tips to consider when caring for your eyes daily:
  • If you work long hours at a computer or reading, lift your eyes away from the screen periodically to rest them. Focus on a distant object. This prevents your eyes from becoming over strained and helps rest overtired eyes. Take a few minutes to close your eyes and relax them. See (Computer Eye Strain).
  • Consider applying two tea bags or cucumbers to your eyes for 10 minutes each afternoon, to help reduce puffiness and allow your eyes a much-needed rest.
  • Always wear sunglasses with adequate UV protection. If a pair of sunglasses doesn't have a UV stamp or sticker, don't assume it is blocking out the suns harmful rays. Always verify your glasses provide ample protection.
  • Wear eye glasses during windy days to avoid over exposure to the elements. There are various shades of glasses you can wear outdoors to protect your eyes during windy days.
  • Wear eye protection when biking or engaging in other vigorous activity that might result in inadvertent injury to your eye.
  • Splash cool water on your eyes periodically during the day to help relax them and reduce puffiness.
  • Avoid using heavy creams around the eye area, which may result in irritation or become too pasty.
  • Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands, which can lead to infections including conjunctivitis.
  • Consider replacing old eye make up or foundation every few months to keep the eye area clean and infection free.
  • Always remove any make up or sunscreen from around the eye area before going to sleep at night.
  • Remove contacts in the evenings, and always clean contacts regularly.
  • Have your eyes checked by a certified optician annually to rule out any disease or changes in vision.
