Tell Your Children to Play Outdoors for Better Eyesight

playing-outside-300x199Now there’s one more reason to tell your kids to play outside! Did you know that children who play outdoors have better eyesight than those who play indoors according to Inquisitr.
Nearsightedness has increased over 65% since 1970 which is largely due to children playing video and computer games. Nearsightedness, also known as Myopia, is a condition where the light that travels into the eye does not focus on the retina but in front of it. This error causes far away images to be blurry. Images that are nearby are not affected and appear clear.

The only way to correct nearsightedness is to wear corrective glasses, contact lenses are surgery. It’s important to book an eye exam for your child if you’re worried as nearsightedness is linked to serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and retina detachment.

Eyes Work Together As A Team

Eye CoordinationHuman eye is an amazing organ that most of us rely on every waking moment of the day.

Eye coordination is the ability of both eyes to work together as a team. Each of your eyes sees a slightly different image and your brain, by a process called fusion, blends these two images into one three-dimensional picture. Good eye coordination keeps the eyes in proper alignment. Eye coordination is a skill that must be developed. Poor eye coordination results from a lack of adequate vision development or improperly developed eye muscle control. Although rare, an injury or disease can cause poor eye coordination.

Because the images seen by each eye must be virtually the same, a person usually compensates for poor eye muscle control by subconsciously exerting extra effort to maintain proper alignment of the eyes. In more severe cases, the muscles cannot adjust the eyes so that the same image is seen and double vision occurs. Because the brain will try to avoid seeing double, it eventually learns to ignore the image sent by one eye. This can result in amblyopia, a serious vision condition commonly known as lazy eye.

Some signs and symptoms that may indicate poor eye coordination include double vision, headaches, eye and body fatigue, irritability, dizziness and difficulty in reading and concentrating. Children may also display characteristics that may indicate poor eye coordination including covering one eye, skipping lines or losing their place while reading, poor sports performance, avoiding tasks that require close work and tiring easily.

Because poor eye coordination can be difficult to detect, periodic optometric examinations, beginning at age 6 months and again at age 3 years are recommended. A comprehensive examination by a doctor of optometry can determine the extent, if any, of poor eye coordination. Poor eye coordination is often successfully treated with eyeglasses and/or vision therapy. The success rate for achieving proper eye coordination is quite high. Sometimes, eye coordination will improve when other vision conditions like nearsightedness or farsightedness are corrected. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.

4 Easy Ways To Clean Your EyeGlasses

Clean You EyeglassEye glasses constantly need cleaning if they are not to impair eyesight with greasy fingerprints, dust, spots and other miscellaneous material that seems to be drawn to glasses. Glasses are sold in a case usually with a polishing cloth for a quick polish during the day but from time to time a more thorough clean is recommended.

Almost 50% of Americans wear prescription glasses and most of them are guilty of not knowing how to clean their glasses correctly. Here’s 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore® suggest's Four different ways you can clean your glasses the right way every time:

The Cleaner Method
First rinse your glasses to ensure that any particles do not scratch the glasses.
Use an eyeglass spray or cleaner and with a cloth over either side of the glasses, rub over the glass lens and the frame with the cleaner.

The Rinse Method
Rinse the lenses under warm running water. Add a spot or two of mild soap, liquid soap or dish washing liquid to your fingertips and work over the lenses to break up any greasy deposits.
Using circular motions to remove the soap, rinse the glasses under running water.
If the glasses are truly clean there will be very little water left on the lenses. Dry the lenses and frames with a clean soft cloth.

The Dunk Method
Fill a sink with warm soapy water. Dunk the glasses and swish them around. Rinse the glasses under running water. Shake to remove excess water and dry using a soft cloth.

Cleaning Eye Glasses with Vinegar
Try cleaning your glasses with vinegar from time to time. Just rub a couple of spots of vinegar onto each lens and wipe off with a soft cloth.
The acetic acid in the vinegar dissolves grease, oil from your skin and stuck-on dirt, leaving your glasses streak free and shining.

Vinegar does not discolor the lenses like ammonia-based cleaners, it is environmentally friendly and there are no harsh chemical smells and irritants to contend with.

Protecting Vision in the Workplace

Protect Your Eyes While WorkingThe use of digital devices, including personal computers, tablets and cell phones, continues to increase.  And, the impact of prolonged usage can often be felt in the eye.  In fact, because of extended use of these devices, close to 70 percent of American adults experience some form of digital eyestrain, according to a new report from The Vision Council.  Symptoms of digital eyestrain can include dry eyes, blurred vision and headaches.
Our goal is to provide employers and employees with free information on topics ranging from eyestrain to industrial eye safety in order to promote eye health at work.

Office workers can take a few simple steps to help prevent eyestrain and fatigue.  20/20 EyeGlass Superstore suggest's:
  • Visit an eye doctor for a dilated eye exam to make sure you are seeing clearly and to detect any potential vision issues.
  • Place your screen 20 to 26 inches away from your eyes and a little bit below eye level.
  • Use a document holder placed next to your computer screen. It should be close enough so you don’t have to swing your head back and forth or constantly change your eye focus.
  • Adjust the text size on the screen to a comfortable level.
  • Change your lighting to lower glare and harsh reflections. Glare filters over your computer screen can also help.
  • Use a chair you can adjust.
  • Choose screens that can tilt and swivel. A keyboard that you can adjust is also helpful.
  • The Vision Council recommends the 20-20-20 break:  every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
Here at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, we’re concerned with keeping our Orlando patients’ vision as healthy as possible. We also want you and your family to have healthy eyes.

Your vision is priceless and it is important that you maintain your visual wellness by scheduling a yearly comprehensive eye exam with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Drop into 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore for all your eye care needs.

We also strongly recommends the use of eye protection in the workplace, especially in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or any profession where eye accidents and injuries may occur.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2012, there were 20,300 recorded occupational eye injuries that resulted in days away from work.

Is America's Vision 20/20

It’s important to have visual testing done on a regular basis.  These screenings test visual acuity, or the ability to see objects and details at both far and near distances. It also involves the standard reading letters of different sizes on an eye chart.  For further information on maintaining healthy eyes check out our previous post, eye health checklist for 2012.

The most commonly used method is visual acuity which is used to evaluate eyesight. Each eye is tested individually and then both eyes are screened at the same time. We advise our clients that already wear contacts or glasses already to wear them during their vision screening.  The best possible vision screening result is 20/20.

If we feel that your eyes require further testing, we’ll gladly schedule you a full eye exam with our in-house optometrist. Please note there is a charge for this appointment.  You are free to schedule an appointment with another optometrist if you wish.

How to Stop Eye Twitching

Why do my eyes twitch? We’ve all had this happen at one point or another.  Maybe you stayed up late studying or perhaps you stared at your computer for hours on end.  Either way, eye twitching can be extremely annoying and hard to get rid of.  Most of us don’t require medical attention for involuntary eye twitching.
  1. Start with hard blinking. Close your eyes as tight as possible. Squeeze them as much as you can and then suddenly open up unexpectedly wide. Execute this type of blinking until the tears burst out of your eyes.

  2. Massage lightly your bottom eyelids in a circular motion using your middle fingers.
  3. Blink for a half a minute. Try to do that with adequate speed, and at the same time, make the movements very light. Imagine that your eyelashes are butterfly's wings. The process of blinking is extremely important to your eyes – it relaxes most of the eye muscles, lubricates and cleanses the eyeballs.
  4. Close your eyes halfway down. You will notice that your upper eyelids constantly tremble with different amplitude. Concentrate your efforts on stopping this trembling.
  5. Blink for a minute with your eyes closed.
  6. Spend 2 minutes to give yourself an Acupressure Massage.
  7. If you can do any Eye Hydrotherapy Procedures.

  8. Read the original article on wikihow.com

Eye twitching can occur under the eye or in the upper eyelid and it can affect the right or left eye.  Eye twitching causes include Benign Essential Blepharospasm (which isn’t harmful), dry eyes, Tourette’s syndrome and strained eyes. Eye twitching should not be confused with drooping eyes which requires serious medical attention as soon as possible.

    When to Contact Your Optometrist

Taking good care of your eyes is extremely important, so if you’re experiencing an eye twitch that lasts more than seven days, results in your eye being permanently shut, moves into your entire face, causes redness or swelling and/or changes into a drooping eyelid, contact your Optometrist right away.  Please feel free to contact our in-house 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore Optometrist who will be more than happy to see you as soon as possible.
