Toys and Children's Eye Safety

It's all fun and games until... You probably know the old familiar saying.

Choking hazards and toxic chemical recalls associated with toys can cause anxiety for parents, eye injuries seem to receive slightly less attention.

Keeping an Eye on the Dangers

Like kids in a candy shop, kids in a toy store are in their glory. Not only are toys wildly entertaining and captivating for kids, they also play a tremendous role in childhood development. But fun does not always equal safe. It's up to you to make the distinction. While common sense is always your best defense, there are some definite toy no-no's, especially for children under 15 since this age group accounted for nearly three quarters (74%) of all toy related injuries in 2009.

Toys and Children's Eye Safety - Play Safe
The toys below should be avoided completely or only permitted with close parental supervision for children of the appropriate age. Check toy packaging for age guidelines:
  • Guns are the worst offenders of eye safety.
  • Toy Weapons in general, are an invitation to eye injury.
  • Children should never use or come in contact with fireworks.
  • Laser Pointers can cause retinal damage in certain situations and should be used with extreme caution.
Set your Sights on the Right Toys
It's smart to establish your own safety checks to help you make the right toy decisions for your little one.

Here are some steps to follow:
  • Prepare: Educate yourself on the right toys for your child's age group and research the toys that interest them.
  • Read Labels: Look for the letters "ASTM" on the label. This means that the toy conforms to certain national safety standards.
  • Play Inspector: Examine for sturdy construction. You don't want a toy that could break and shatter into sharp pieces.
  • Keep Safety Going At Home: Once a toy has passed your safety checks, demonstrate proper use of the toy to your child since misuse of the toy is also another cause of injury.

EyeWear For Kids: Safety, Fit and Fashion

It's a common scenario: you start to notice that your child is blinking and squinting frequently, sitting only inches away from the screen during TV time, and holding that book a little too close to their face while reading.

). EyeWear For Kids: Safety, Fit and Fashion

Being an aware parent, you know that vision problems can hinder your child's development, so you schedule their annual eye examination. The exam ends with the doctor handing you a prescription for the necessary eyewear.
What type of eyewear should you and your little one shop for? Not only are there tons of styles out there, but there's also lots of technical considerations for fitting and maintaining your child's eyewear.

Frames: Find Fortitude

Shop for strong frames that can stand up to your child's active lifestyle. Plastic frames were once known as the sturdier choice for children, although modern innovations have leveled the two frame materials as equals. In fact, hypoallergenic metals like titanium and stainless steel are great for kids because they are strong and can sustain lots of wear and tear.

Lenses: Seek Safety and Strength

Safety is first when it comes to lenses. Most vision experts agree that polycarbonate is the best lens material not only for its impact resistance (often called "shatter proof"), but for its durability and light weight.

Target the Total Fit

Sure, the frame and lenses are important, but adding in the right features can equal fitting perfection. Carefully constructed eyeglasses are virtually useless if they are sliding off your child's face. Frames that are too tight can cause pain. Talk to your eye care professional about how the below features can give your child's eyeglasses just the right fit:
  • Adjustable nose pads and Saddle bridges
  • Cable temples
  • Spring hinges

To Contact or Not to Contact

Contact lenses and young children don't normally mix. This has always been the traditional wisdom that kept many optometrists from prescribing contact lenses to younger children, except for specific vision conditions or involvement in certain sports.

Fashionably Focused

Today's fashion forward frames that include pop-culture icons themes and removable charms can make hesitant kids comfortable, and even excited, with eyeglasses. And that means they will be more likely to wear them.

We hope you enjoyed our 2013 Fall Eyeglass Trends blog post.  There are many neat looks to choose from for your eyeglasses including nautical, vintage, ombre fading, metallic and vibrant colors. If you’re interested in purchasing new frames for your winter wardrobe, check out our savings section for great deals. We look forward to seeing you in the store soon!

Warning Signs of Vision Problems in Children

While children with a family history of childhood vision problems are more likely to have eye problems themselves, all parents should know the warning signs of vision problems.
Warning Signs of Vision Problems in Children
Babies Under 1 Year of Age

Babies older than 3 months should be able to follow or "track" an object, like a toy or ball, with their eyes as it moves across their field of vision. If your baby can't make steady eye contact by this time or seems unable to see, let your child's doctor know.

Before 4 months most babies eyes occasionally look misaligned (strabismus). However, after 4 months of age inward crossing or outward drifting that occurs regularly is usually abnormal. If one of these is present, let your child's doctor know.

Preschool Age

If your child's eyes become misaligned, let your child's doctor know right away. However, vision problems such as a lazy eye (amblyopia) may have no warning signs, and your child may not complain of vision problems. Thus it's important at this time to have your child's vision checked. There are special tests to check your child's vision even if he or she cannot yet read.
It’s always a good idea to get your child’s eyes checked on an annual or bi-annual basis, but here are some signs you can look for that may indicate that your child is having vision problems.

All Children

If you notice any one of the following, let your child's doctor know:
  • Eyes that are misaligned (look crossed, turn out, or don't focus together)
  • White or grayish-white color in the pupil
  • Eyes that flutter quickly from side to side or up and down
  • Bulging eye(s)
  • Child often complains of eye pain, itchiness, or discomfort
  • Redness in either eye that doesn't go away in a few days
  • Pus or crust in either eye
  • Eyes that are always watery
  • Drooping eyelid(s)
  • Child rubs or squints eyes often
  • Eyes that are always sensitive to light
  • Any change in the eyes from how they usually look
  • Gets headaches when reading or writing
  • Words slide together or get blurry when reading
  • Reads below grade level
  • Loses place while reading

Tips For Living Well with Low Vision

Glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that gradually reduces sight, often goes unnoticed for years, as damage to the optic nerve occurs. In fact, more than 2.7 million people in the United States have glaucoma. We’ve compiled the below tips to help support everyone in living well and independently despite any vision loss.

From time to time, 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore offers Orlando residents free glaucoma screening to encourage healthy vision and eye habits.
living well with low vision
Ideas for Home:
  1. Increase lighting – One of the simplest ways to boost your confidence at home is to increase lighting. Try using stronger light bulbs throughout your home.
  2. Add color contrast – Adding contrasting colors to your daily routine can help ease confusion too.
  3. Use nonskid decorative rugs – Whether in your bathroom or on any slippery surface, make sure that all rugs and mats are nonskid. Using items that contrast with floor colors can also help with visibility.
On-the-go Advice:
  1. Easy payment options – Having low vision doesn’t mean you need to give up financial independence. Banks can provide large-print checks to assist with payment for groceries or bills.
  2. Use smartphone technology – Assistive technologies have made great strides in the past few years. Use built-in zoom functions on your smartphone to increase the size of text or images for easier reading. Smartphone apps can also be used to convert your voice to text for easy entry in messages and e-mails.
  3. Carry a portable magnifier – If you know that you’ll be in a situation requiring a lot of reading, take a portable magnifier with you for easy enlargement of text.

Suggestions For Good Eye Health

People are afraid of losing their sight. Still, many people are not familiar with the ways of taking care of their eyes.

Get your eyes tested every year.

Blindness is straight forward linked to smoking, so quit the habit. Smokers are more prone to macular degeneration (the major cause for blindness) as compared to non-smokers or past smokers.

Relative history: Some of the eye problems are hereditary such as glaucoma or squint. So, people should know about their family eye history, eye diseases such as Glaucoma show no symptoms and most people are unaware of it until it’s too late. Regular visits to your optometrist can easily pick up eye diseases such as these to ensure your vision is protected.

Contact care: If lenses are used, then proper care should be taken of the lenses. They should be washed properly, hands should be dried before touching the lenses or your eyes. The lens should be cleaned with the lens solution only.

Protect your eyes: The eyes should be protected with safety glasses or protective goggles in case you are working with unsafe or airborne materials.

Keep fit and healthy: Regular exercises are necessary to live a healthy life. But, while playing games such as squash, you must wear safety guards such as a helmet or sports goggles to guard your eyes from a flying ball.

Eat Healthy and Nutirious Food: Your diet plays an important role in the care and protection of your eyes and is your first line of defense to prevent eye related illnesses, blindness, and other sight impairment issues. Fortunately, nutritionists have pinpointed key nutrients that can promote healthy eyes.

Healthy Eyes During Pregnancy

Eyes may change somewhat during pregnancy due to fluid retention, increased blood volume, hormonal fluctuations and other physical shifts that are part of pregnancy. Usually these changes are temporary and resolve after the baby is born, or after weaning a breast-fed child. Vision changes tend to be minor and don’t require a new eyeglass prescription. LASIK surgery should not be done when a woman is pregnant or breastfeeding.

Healthy Eyes During Pregnancy

What to Look For

A condition known as dry eye may result from hormonal fluctuations. Talk to your Eye M.D. about lubricating drops and other treatments that are safe during pregnancy. Wearing contact lenses may be less comfortable when dry eye is present. Eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EFA), such as salmon, flax seeds and walnuts, may help resolve dry eye and also supports general good health.

If vision becomes very blurry, it may signal high blood pressure or pregnancy-related diabetes. Contact your doctor right away.

Visiting your local optometrist allows doctors to look directly at your blood vessels which can reveal early warning signs of serious health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes before the symptoms show up anywhere else in the body.

Have Sufficent Nutrition For Your Healthy Eyes

Your diet plays an important role in the care and protection of your eyes and is your first line of defense to prevent eye related illnesses, blindness, and other sight impairment issues. Fortunately, nutritionists have pinpointed key nutrients that can promote healthy eyes.

Vitamin A and vitamin C were inversely associated with age-related cataract in Asian populations but not in Western populations, and beta-carotene and lycopene had no significant association with risk of cataract.

The researchers did not study the role of antioxidant or vitamin supplement intake in preventing cataract and recommended that this role be investigated with additional studies.

If you're over age 50, it's likely your diet doesn't contain all the nutrients necessary for optimum eye health. That's the finding of a recent review of nutritional studies performed by researchers at Tufts University and Lesley University.
Pile of red bell peppersThe pigment in red bell peppers is the source of most of the zeaxanthin used in nutritional supplements.
The review highlighted data from the most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which indicates that most Americans fall below the optimal intake of the following nutrients that research shows can help protect eye health as people age: vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.

The researchers concluded that to limit vision loss within the aging U.S. population, it's important to increase awareness among Americans, especially those aged 45 to 65, about the importance of nutrients and foods that could help prevent age-related eye disease.

These foods were identified as good sources of nutrients important for eye health:
  • Vitamin C: citrus fruits, berries, tomatoes and broccoli
  • Vitamin E: vegetable oils, wheat germ, nuts and legumes
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin: kale, spinach, broccoli, peas, corn, colored bell peppers
  • Beta-carotene: carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato and spinach
  • Zinc: oysters, beef and other meats, nuts
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: salmon and other cold-water fish
to read the original article click here.

Eye vitamins and other supplements also can help meet required daily intakes of these nutrients. But anyone considering a program of dietary supplements should consult their eye doctor or other health-care provider beforehand, the study authors advised.

Your eyesight is your most precious sense. Add the foods on this list into your weekly diet to keep your eyes beautiful, healthy, and well protected.

Today, more than 2 million Americans have age-related macular degeneration (AMD), according to the 2012 “Vision Problems in the U.S.” report from Prevent Blindness America.  AMD is an eye disease that causes central vision to deteriorate over time, making simple activities such as driving and reading increasingly difficult.  Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for AMD.
The good news is that with early detection through a dilated eye exam, and treatment, vision can be preserved.  We are joining with its affiliates and partners to  promote the national “AMD: Awareness Makes a Difference” program to educate adults on the disease and the steps that can be taken today, including regular eye exams, to protect vision in the future.

What Your Doctor Looks For During An Eye Exam

Are you one of the many Americans who skip getting routine eye exams each year? Having a comprehensive eye examination on an annual basis is crucial to maintaining proper eye health. Routine eye exams also can also detect other underlying conditions.  Your optometrist will perform several tests during your eye exam that test and check your vision.  These tests are completely painless.  Some procedures are a bit uncomfortable but they aren’t hard to deal with.  A proper eye exam will take approximately one hour.

One of the first procedures your optometrist will do is test your visual acuity.  This measures the sharpness and clarity of your vision.

Your optometrist will look at your confrontation visual fields during your eye exam as well.  This is a quick check of your basic field of vision including your peripheral vision.

Pupillary Tests are also performed during a routine eye exam.  Pupillary reactions can be very informative when it comes to diagnosing various eye conditions.

20/20 Eyeglass Superstore Helps You Handle Eye Injuries

Your vision is extremely important.  Imagine not being able to see a beautiful sunrise, your children and family or an incredible painting.  Poor vision habits can result in eye deterioration or even blindness.
20202 EyeGlass
Some common eye injuries, such as deep puncture wounds from accidents, could require immediate treatment or surgery to prevent permanent eye damage resulting in vision loss.
Minor surface scratches, on the other hand, may need only simple monitoring after an initial visit to the eye doctor to make sure complications such as eye infections don't occur.

This guide to common eye injuries can help you determine your next step following an accident, especially if you are in an emergency situation. Remember also that common sense safety precautions such as wearing safety goggles or glasses may be your best approach to preventing eye injuries altogether and maintaining healthy vision for a lifetime.
Common conditions associated with eye injury and trauma include:
  • Scratched Eye (Corneal Abrasion)
  • Penetrating or Foreign Objects in the Eye
  • Caustic Foreign Substance in the Eye (Chemical Burn)
  • Subconjunctival Hemorrhages (Eye Bleeding)
  • Traumatic Iritis
  • Hyphemas and Orbital Blowout Fractures
If you have any eye injury, contact your eye care practitioner immediately for advice.

It’s imperative that you see an optometrist on a consistent basis to keep your eyes healthy.  There are many diseases and conditions that be cured and treated successfully if caught early.  According to the American Optometric Association of Ophthalmology, factors such as your eye health, family history and age determine how often you should have your eyes checked. Certain eye conditions such as Glaucoma or Eye injuries have no symptoms until it’s too late, so please don’t forget to visit your optometrist on a regular basis. If you’re overdue for your eye exam, please contact 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore to set up an eye exam.

Treat all eye injuries as potential emergencies, and never hesitate to contact or see an eye doctor immediately. Don't take risks with your eyesight. Remember, you have only one pair of eyes. Visiting your local optometrist allows doctors to look directly and help you save your vision.

Sports-related Eye Injuries - 20/20 EyeGlass SuperStore

Here at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, we are always looking for new and interesting vision related news to share and today we’ve definitely found it.

Every year, close to 6,000 Americans suffer an eye injury related to playing basketball, according to estimates by Prevent Blindness America.

In addition, eye injuries from water sports and activities were the second most-reported sports-related eye injury. These include swimming, surfing, scuba diving, and water skiing/tubing. The use of guns, including air, gas, spring, and BB, caused the most eye injuries in those ages 14 and younger.
Eye injuries from any sport can include infection, corneal abrasions, blunt trauma, inflamed iris, fracture of the eye socket, swollen or detached retinas or even a traumatic cataract.  And in some cases, a significant eye injury can cause permanent vision loss.

We have put together guidelines to help consumers find the best eye protection including:
    Sports-related Eye Injuries
  • Those who wear prescription glasses should ask their eye doctor to be fitted with prescription eye protection.
  • Monocular athletes (those with only one eye that sees well), should consult with an eye doctor to determine which sports are safe to participate in. Monocular athletes should always wear sports eye protection.
  • Sports protective eye wear should be labeled. Check the packaging to ensure that the eye protector selected has been tested for sports use.
  • Make sure the lenses either stay in place or pop outward in the event of an accident. Lenses that pop in against the eyes can be very dangerous.
  • Fogging of the lenses can be a problem. Some types of protective eyewear are available with anti-fog coating. Others have side vents for additional ventilation. Try on different types to determine which is most comfortable.
  • Sports eye protection should be padded or cushioned along the brow and bridge of the nose. Padding will prevent the eye protection from cutting the skin.
  • Try on the eye protector to determine if it's the right size before purchasing. Adjust the strap and make sure it's not too tight or too loose.
  • All athletes should get an eye exam from an eye care professional. An expert may be able to detect a vision problem and improve performance in addition to saving sight later in life.

August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month
Along with back-to-school shopping, consider making August the month for basic healthcare services such as immunizations, dental cleanings, a physical and eye exam. In fact, children younger than school age can benefit from such services.
  1. Ages Zero to Five

  2. School-age Children

Ensure early detection by scheduling an annual eye exam. If you notice the following problems with your child between appointments, see your regular eye doctor right away.
  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • Frequent headaches
  • Covering one eye
  • Short attention span
  • Avoiding reading assignments or holding reading materials close to the face
  • An eye turning in or out
  • Seeing double
  • Losing his or her place when reading
  • Difficulty with reading retention

Don’t forget, your prescription may need updating if it’s been over six months since your last eye checkup. Each 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore location has an independent doctor of optometry on-site and  walk-in’s are welcome, but remember to leave yourself approximately 15 minutes to fill out the required paperwork.

Save Your Vision - Get Screened For Glaucoma

When is the last time you had your eyes tested?

It’s important to have regular vision screening performed on a consistent basis.  During your visit, we test your visual acuity, also known as the ability to see various objects and details at both far and near distances. It also involves reading various size letters on an eye chart (all kids love this part!).  If your child ends up needing glasses, make sure you read our previous post, top 5 tips on choosing children’s eyeglasses.

Tips to Promote Your Child’s Vision

Tips to Promote Your Child’s Vision

August as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month to Educate Parents, Teacherson Importance of Healthy Vision for Kids

As many children begin to head back to school after the summer break, We hopes to help educate parents and educators on the importance of children’s vision.
As you prepare your child for the new school year, have you thought about how to protect his or her vision?  Additionally, August was deemed Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month to inspire parents to make their children’s eye health a priority.

According to the recent “Cost of Vision Problems: The Economic Burden of Vision Loss and Eye Disorders in the United States” study vision disorders in children ages 0-17 cost Americans more than $5.7 billion in direct and indirect costs. Fortunately, eye problems such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) can be successfully treated if detected early.

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety month to inspire parents to make their child’s vision health a priority.

Here are three tips on how to protect your children’s vision for the new school year:

1.  Take your child to an eye doctor before the school year begins. Make an appointment with your optometrist to have your child’s eyes checked, or have their prescription updated. Eye problems such as lazy eye and crossed eyes can be treated if detected early. If you don’t have a regular eye doctor, feel free to drop by any 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore location. No appointment is necessary either, all we ask is that you come in 20 minutes earlier than your desired appointment time to fill out the required paperwork.

2. Keep your child’s eyes safe from the sun.

3. Take special care of your child’s eyeglasses.

Overall, there are three key things you can do to protect your child’s vision for the new school year: take your child to the optometrist, keep their eyes safe from the sun and take special care of their eyeglasses. Do you have any tips to add?
