Age-Related Eye Diseases

Age-Related Eye DiseasesWe seem resigned to the idea that as we age, we will have trouble getting around, become hard of hearing, and begin to not see too well. Leading eye care researchers and clinicians, though, are calling for a shift in the way we think of vision and aging. The fact is, low vision can often be delayed or prevented with appropriate screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
You can’t control the passage of time, but you can do a great deal to preserve your sight as you age:
  • Be aware of your risk factors. You need to know what genetic factors, lifestyle choices, diseases, and exposures place you in a higher risk category for certain diseases so that you and your vision care provider can adjust your screening intervals accordingly.
  • Have a baseline eye exam at age 40 if you are an adult with no risk factors for cataracts, glaucoma, AMD, or diabetic retinopathy. People who have no vision problems or obvious risk factors should have a baseline eye examination at age 40, to establish a standard against which future exam results can be compared.
  • Get screened earlier or more frequently screening if you have risk factors for cataracts, glaucoma, AMD, or diabetic retinopathy. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease, for example, or if you fall into a high-risk ethnic group, you should receive thorough eye examinations more often. Click on the links above for lists of risk factors and recommended screening intervals.
  • Cooperate with your vision care provider. This advice applies to examinations, preventive measures, treatment, and follow-up care. If you have diabetes, for example, you should have a comprehensive dilated eye examination annually. If you have glaucoma, you should use your eye drops daily as prescribed. If you have AMD and your provider has asked you to test your vision with an Amsler grid, you should do so every day. After cataract surgery, you should wear your eye shield and use your antibiotics as your provider has instructed.
  • Listen to your body and report any new symptoms promptly to your vision care provider. If your vision changes, especially if you have AMD or diabetic retinopathy, tell your provider immediately.

Conjunctivitis Also Known As PINK EYE

Pink EyeConjunctivitis is a common and often very contagious condition more commonly referred to as pink eye. Conjunctivitis often involves inflammation and swelling of the conjunctiva or the clear membrane covering the eye and lining the inner eyelids. Very common among young children particularly those in school or daycare, conjunctivitis typically pose no real threat to the patient's vision or wellness.
Causes and Risk Factors
  • Allergic reactions
  • Viral contamination
  • Bacterial contamination
  • Exposure to irritants or chemical pollutants
Signs and Symptoms of Conjunctivitis
One of the more commonly reported signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis include discomfort and pain in the eye, accompanied by redness or swelling of the eyelid, hence the name "pinkeye." Patients may experience reddening of the inner and outer eyelid or may experience swollen eyelids. Some patients may report increased sensitivity to light and other irritants including the wind.
Many patients with conjunctivitis will have discharge from the eyes that may be clear, white, green or yellow in color. Yellow or green discharge from the eye may suggest an infection and may require antibiotics or other forms of aggressive treatment.

Treatment and Prevention
The best treatment for conjunctivitis is prevention. You can prevent an infection by washing your hands regularly and avoiding touching the eyes or face unnecessarily. If infected you should throw out any cosmetics or other eye products that may result in re-contamination.
Fortunately conjunctivitis more often than not is a minor condition that will clear up on its own in one to two weeks. If you have any of the signs or symptoms of conjunctivitis, be sure to consult with us at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, your health care provider determines the cause and select an appropriate treatment.

Eye Cosmetic Safety: Watch Out for Hidden Harms

Eye shadow, liner and mascara are great ways to make your eyes pop, but they can also be a breeding ground for bacteria. Eye makeup expires just like food does. Liquid and creamy formulas harbor bacteria faster and more easily than powders. Minimize your chance of developing infections and problems that can seriously impact your vision by following these tips:
  • Throw out anything you bought more than three months ago
  • Store makeup in a cool, dry place – not in your steamy bathroom.
  • Always wash your hands before applying eye makeup. Ensure your face and eyelids are clean, as well as your applicators and brushes.
  • Never share makeup with a friend. And never try store testers, which can be contaminated; even fresh applicators can transfer bacteria.
  • Don’t use dried-out mascara, and never moisten it with water or saliva. Replace it!
  • Keep eye makeup outside the eye and above the lash line; don’t line the inner lid, where makeup can enter your eye or clog the oil glands of your upper and lower lids.
  • Don’t use kohl eyeliners because they may contain dangerous levels of lead.
  • Metallic, glittery and powder makeup can be especially problematic, flaking and irritating corneas and eyes, especially if your eyes are dry. It can also get between your contact lenses and eyes, which can scratch the cornea and become infected. This may cause a potentially blinding corneal ulcer.
  • Don’t use permanent coloring or dyes on your eyelashes or eyebrows, which can permanently damage your eyes if used incorrectly.
  • Always remove all makeup at night

Diabetes Affects the Eyes and Vision

Diabetes Affects the Eyes and VisionAlthough individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts at a younger age and are twice as likely to develop glaucoma as are non-diabetics, the primary vision problem caused by diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of new cases of blindness and low vision in adults aged 20-65:
  • "Retinopathy" is a general term that describes damage to the retina.

Diabetic Retinopathy

In addition, fluid can leak into the macula, the small sensitive area in the center of the retina that provides detailed vision. This fluid can cause macular edema (or swelling), which can occur at any stage of diabetic retinopathy, although it is more likely to occur as the disease progresses.
Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy can include:
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Flashing lights, which can indicate a retinal detachment
  • A veil, cloud, or streaks of red in the field of vision, or dark or floating spots in one or both eyes, which can indicate bleeding
  • Blind or blank spots in the field of vision
Ocular and functional effects of diabetic retinopathy can include any or all of the following:
  • Fluctuating vision in response to changing blood glucose levels; vision can change from day-to-day, or from morning to evening
  • Blurred central vision from macular edema can interfere with reading
  • Decreased visual acuity can interfere with seeing the markings on an insulin syringe or the display on a standard blood glucose monitor
  • Irregular patches of vision loss or "blind spots" can make it difficult to judge the size of food portions on a plate.
  • Decreased depth perception, in combination with decreased visual acuity, can make it difficult to see curbs and steps, or walk to the diabetes clinic.

Chocolate is Good For Your Eyesight

chocolate-is-good-for-your-eyesightDark chocolate has been long recognised for its health-boosting properties, including decreasing cholesterol and blood pressure, but it has now been revealed that it may be beneficial for our eyesight.

Recent studies at The University of Reading have shown that dark chocolate contains flavonols which may help to improve eyesight in dark or low-contrast conditions. The study involved 30 participants aged 18-25 who ate 35g of dark chocolate or the equivalent of white chocolate at one week intervals. Those who consumed dark chocolate were able to see 17% better than when they ate white chocolate. They were tested 2 hours after they ate a piece of dark chocolate but lead researchers suggests the effects could kick in after just one hour. The tests to determine visual sensitivity were carried out by asking the participants to read numbers that became progressively similar to the background. To test motion sensitivity, participants were asked to detect moving signal dots against a moving background.

Dark chocolate is a good source of flavonols because it has a high cocoa content, unlike white chocolate which is largely cocoa butter. Flavonols are believed to be beneficial for eyesight because they increase blood flow to the retina in the eyes.   The retina is responsible for receiving an image and sending it to the brain. This task requires a lot of energy, yet eyes do not naturally have a plentiful  blood supply. Better blood flow means the eyes can function at their best, which may be a possible reason for improved visibility in difficult conditions.
In addition, dark chocolate contains lutein and zeaxanthin which are proven to protect eyesight by reducing the risk of developing common conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Fish Oil Good For Your Eye Health

When it comes to your eyes, what you put in your mouth may impact your vision. While it sounds "fishy" your daily consumption of fish oils can impact your vision in a beneficial way! Most people living in the West consume far too many Omega 6 and Omega 9 fatty acids. Omega 9 fatty acids commonly come from olive oil, peanuts, avocado and similar food products. While important, omega 9 fatty acids are not considered "essential" fatty acids because your body has the ability to manufacture them naturally.

Fish Oil
You should consider taking a supplement containing fish oils. With time this can help prevent unwanted illnesses and even help protect you from age related macular degeneration and other vision loss problems associated with inadequate nutrition.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential to eye health. They’re found in supplements and fatty fish like Atlantic mackerel, herring, salmon, rainbow trout, tuna, and sardines. Omega-3s have many health benefits ranging from lowering cholesterol and blood sugar, to reducing the risk of macular degeneration.

20/20 Eyeglass Superstore® keeps you updated on various eye diseases and eye conditions and helps you to avoid eye diseases and problem.
We recommend you take care of your eyes. Get your eyes checked annually to be safe and protected from eye problems.

Diabetes Can Affect Your Eyes

  • The most serious eye condition associated with diabetes involves the network of blood vessels supplying the retina. This condition is called diabetic retinopathy.
  • The unusual changes in blood sugar levels resulting from diabetes can affect the lens inside the eye, especially when diabetes is uncontrolled. This can result in blurring of vision which comes and goes over the day, depending on your blood sugar levels.
  • A longer term effect of diabetes is that the lens of your eye can go cloudy. This is called a cataract.
Not everyone who has diabetes develops an eye complication. Of those that do, many people have a very mild form of retinopathy which may never progress to a sight threatening condition
The most serious complication of diabetes for the eye is the development of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes affects the tiny blood vessels of the eye and if they become blocked or leak then the retina and possibly your vision will be affected.
Diabetes Can Affect Your EyesAnnual Diabetic Eye Screening
If you have diabetes this does not necessarily mean that your sight will be affected. If your diabetes is well controlled you are less likely to have problems, or they may be less serious. However, if there are complications that affect the eyes, this can sometimes result in serious loss of sight.
You should also go for an annual eye test with the optometrist (optician) as the diabetic eye screening test does not replace the regular eye examination.

Children's Colourful EyeGlasses

Children's Colourful Frames For Glass-wearers!
Depending on your child’s visual acuity, an optician will prescribe children’s glasses for either full-time or part-time wear. In some cases, children may be instructed to remove their glasses for schoolwork such as reading and writing or they might have to wear glasses permanently.

Unfortunately, most children are at the centre of a little teasing about their glasses, usually at the very beginning as friends and family familiarise themselves with this “new look”. So, it’s imperative that a frame is chosen to suit both the child’s face shape and personality. Here at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, we have colourful frames for boys and girls which encourage children to become proud glass-wearers!

Getting the Right Fit

Children can be rough on their glasses and having a spare pair is most important. Especially if the child is not too keen on wearing glasses and plays the trick of “they are missing” or “they broke by accident”. On a more serious note, if your child has a very strong prescription and is not capable of functioning without glasses, then, having a spare pair is essential.

Drop into 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore for all your eye care needs. We have a frame for every face and a price for any budget. We also have Independent Optometrists located on site who will be happy to examine your vision. Walk-in’s are welcome but we ask that you come 15 minutes prior to your desired appointment time.

Importance Of Having Healthy Eyes

People often forget the importance of having healthy eyes & how your eye health can contribute to your overall well-being. The first & most important step in taking care of your eyes is to visit your optician & book an eye-test. A simple eye-test will detect any existing problems or any potential problems which could possibly deteriorate even further if not diagnosed.
Your eyesight is your most precious sense. Add the foods on this list into your weekly diet to keep your eyes beautiful, healthy, and well protected.
Importance Of Having Healthy Eyes
Having a poor diet can put your sight at risk; however, the link between your diet & your eye health is very low. A survey discovered that 60% of people were not aware that what they eat can affect their eye health. Many cases of sight loss can be avoided simply by making an appointment with your eye optician.
Human eye is an amazing organ that most of us rely on every waking moment of the day.
You have only a pair of eyes, so take care of your eyes. It is always a good idea to consult with your eye doctor to discuss your options.
