Vitamins That Improve Eyesight

You may be able to help prevent or delay the onset of these and other eye problems with a high intake of certain nutrients, including vitamins. However, don't attempt to self-treat any eye condition with supplementary vitamins unless you are under the supervision of a doctor, as some have potentially harmful side effects and may interfere with the function of certain medications.

Your eyesight is your most precious sense. Add the foods on this list into your weekly  list to keep your eyes beautiful, healthy, and well protected.

vitamin cVitamin C

People with age-related macular degeneration could lower their risk of irreversible vision loss by taking a combination of vitamins, one of which is vitamin C.
Excellent sources of dietary vitamin C include citrus fruits, vegetables and fruit juice.

vitamin-eVitamin E

Most people get enough vitamin E to fulfill this requirement from foods including nuts such as almonds, avocados and vegetable oils.
Vitamin E's strong antioxidant properties helped make it effective against macular degeneration. Taking supplemental vitamin E along with vitamin C may also treat uveitis, a condition in which one of the layers in the eye becomes inflamed and obscures vision.

vitimins AVitamin A

Your body needs vitamin A to produce rhodopsin, the receptors in your retina that allow your eye to react to light. Without enough vitamin A in your diet you may be unable to see in dim light, a condition known as night blindness. A severe or prolonged vitamin A deficiency can ultimately result in corneal ulcers, scarring, and eventually, a complete loss of vision.

VITAMIN-D-Vitamin D

Vitamin D can help inhibit tissue inflammation and the development of abnormal blood vessels that contribute to the eye condition. Your skin synthesizes some vitamin D when you're exposed to direct sunlight, but good food sources include eggs, fatty fish such as salmon and vitamin D-fortified products like breakfast cereal or milk. Adults should aim to get at least 600 IUs of vitamin D daily.

Create A Healthier Workplace

Work days are getting longer which, in turn, means longer hours at our office desk staring at the computer screen, unfortunately this takes a toll on our bodies especially our eyes. Having minor vision problems that have not been properly detected and diagnosed such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or presbyopia can contribute further to the declining health of your eyesight. It’s important to schedule routine eye examinations at least once per year. - See more at: http://2020eyeglassorlando.com/office-eye-strain-care-and-proper-eye-examination/#sthash.kbAhaCM2.dpuf

Acanthamoeba

Acanthamoeba is one of the most ubiquitous organisms in the environment, but rarely causes infections. When infection does occur, however, it can be extremely serious and vision threatening.
AcanthamoebaBy educating yourself about the symptoms and risk factors for Acanthamoeba keratitis, you can help protect yourself from this potentially sight-threatening infection.  The best defense against Acanthamoeba keratitis infection is proper contact lens hygiene. See the Lens Care Guide for detailed contact lens care instructions.

Symptoms

  • A red, (frequently) painful eye infection—especially if the discomfort does not improve with treatment.
  • Foreign body sensation, tearing, light sensitivity, and blurred vision.
  • Red, irritated eyes lasting for an unusually long period of time after removal of contact lenses.

Risk Factors

  • Use of tap water in cleaning and disinfecting contact lenses—including the lens case.
  • Swimming with contact lenses in the eyes, especially in fresh water lakes and rivers. Acanthamoeba keratitis has also been isolated from virtually all water sources—from pools to hot tubs to showers.
  • Failure to follow lens care instructions (see Lens Care Guide below)/poor compliance.

Lens Care Guide

  • Always wash hands before handling contact lenses.
  • Rub and rinse the surface of the contact lens before storing.
  • Use only sterile products recommended by your optometrist to clean and disinfect your lenses.
  • Avoid using tap water to wash or store contact lenses.
  • Contact lens solution must be discarded upon opening the case, and fresh solution used each time the lens is placed in the case.
  • Replace lenses using your doctor’s prescribed schedule.
  • Do not sleep in contact lenses unless prescribed by your doctor and never after swimming.
  • Never swap lenses with someone else.
  • Never put contact lenses in your mouth.
  • See your optometrist regularly for contact lens evaluation.
  • If you experience RSVP (redness, secretions, visual blurring or pain), return to your optometrist immediately!

Pure Aloe Vera for Dry Eyes

Pure Aloe Vera for Dry EyesPeople who suffer from dry eye often experience symptoms such as burning, itching and redness. Over-the-counter artificial tears may help relieve symptoms, but, for chronic sufferers, the discomfort and irritation return. This discomfort will often prompt people with dry eye to search for alternative treatments, such as aloe vera, a plant well-known for its soothing properties.

Cause
A tear film made of three layers coats the surface of your eye, and if any of these layers has a poor quality, you may experience dry eye. Another cause of dry eye occurs when your eyes fail to produce an adequate amount of tears to coat, nourish and soothe your eye.

Aloe Vera

The leaves of the aloe plant contain a thick, gel-like substance that can help soothe burns, dry skin and other conditions. Aloe vera gel cannot improve your tear film or increase the amount of tears you produce. You should not place aloe vera gel directly in your eye since this may increase the discomfort and irritation on the surface of your eye.

Considerations

If you feel that aloevera could help your dry eye symptoms, you should talk with your doctor before applying the gel or other aloe era solution. Your doctor may suggest applying a small amount at first, and this will help you determine how well the surface of your eye will tolerate the aloe. If you experience any adverse reactions to aloe vera near your eye, discontinue use immediately.

UV Protection Can Be Incorporated Into Eyeglasses

UV Protection Can Be Incorporated Into EyeglassesUV protection can be incorporated into eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses. We can shield ourselves from sun damage in other ways, too.

Wear Sunglasses:
You need not sport a designer label or shell out a week’s pay to buy a good pair of sunglasses. Look for those that block 99% or more of UVA and UVB radiation. Polarized lenses will reduce glare when you’re in the snow, on the water, or driving.

Wear UV Blocking Contact Lenses:
Contact lenses that incorporate UV-blocking optical materials offer added protection because they can filter out UV rays that stray past hats and sunglasses.

Wear a Hat:
Broad-brimmed hats aren’t as high-tech as UV-blocking contact lenses, but they’re very effective in shading your eyes, as well as your skin, from solar radiation. In fact, a hat with a wide brim (3 in. or more) can block about half of the UV radiation from the sun and reduce the amount of sunlight that shines in around the edges of your sunglasses.

Minimize Sun Exposure:
Another simple but effective way to reduce your risk from UV exposure is to stay out of the sun, particularly between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when sunlight is most direct.

Use Sunscreen:
When applying sunscreen, don’t forget your face and eyelids. Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher about a half hour before you engage in outdoor activities, and reapply it every couple of hours if you’re sweating or swimming.

Look Out for Children:
Children’s eyes aren’t as good at screening out UV rays as adult eyes are. Parents and guardians should purchase sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen for children and make sure they wear them. In choosing sunglasses, look for high-impact lenses that won’t break easily, and secure the glasses with a Velcro strap to make sure they don’t get lost.

Once you and any children in your care are suited up in hats and sunglasses and have been slathered with sunscreen, enjoy your time outdoors.

Anterior Uveitis

Anterior UveitisAnterior uveitis is an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, which includes the iris (colored part of the eye) and adjacent tissue, known as the ciliary body. If untreated, it can cause permanent damage and loss of vision from the development of glaucoma, cataract or retinal edema. It usually responds well to treatment; however, there may be a tendency for the condition to recur. Treatment usually includes prescription eye drops, which dilate the pupils, in combination with anti-inflammatory drugs. Treatment usually takes several days, or up to several weeks, in some cases.

Anterior uveitis can occur as a result of trauma to the eye, such as a blow or foreign body penetrating the eye. It can also be a complication of other eye disease, or it may be associated with general health problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, rubella and mumps. In most cases, there is no obvious underlying cause.

Signs/symptoms may include a red, sore and inflamed eye, blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and a small pupil. Becuase the symptoms of anterior uveitis are similar to those of other eye diseases, your optometrist will carefully examine the inside of your eye, under bright light and high magnification, to determine the presence and severity of the condition. Your optometrist may also perform or arrange for other diagnostic tests to help pinpoint the cause.

Play Outdoors and Lower Your Risk of Nearsightedness

Play OutdoorsThe number of myopic children is increasing worldwide, and while genetics certainly play a role, the rapid rise in sufferers suggests that environmental factors may also be to blame.

How outdoor light may protect your eyesight
Myopia is often caused by the eyeball being too long. Due to this increased length, light entering the eye does not focus sharply on the retina, resulting in blurry vision. When stimulated by intense light, the retina of the human eye releases dopamine, which inhibits eye growth, and may help prevent myopia.

In addition, bright light causes the pupil to constrict, allowing sharp vision for a greater range of distance.

Beware of UV rays - too much of a good thing
While exposure to bright outdoor light may help your child maintain good vision, it is important to remember that UV rays can be very damaging to the eyes. If you plan to encourage your child to spend more time outdoors, invest in a pair of UV protective glasses for him or her. UV protection is unrelated to tint, so even very light colored sunglasses, which allow bright light to reach the eyes, can offer 100% UV protection.

Eyes Work Together As A Team

Eye CoordinationHuman eye is an amazing organ that most of us rely on every waking moment of the day.

Eye coordination is the ability of both eyes to work together as a team. Each of your eyes sees a slightly different image and your brain, by a process called fusion, blends these two images into one three-dimensional picture. Good eye coordination keeps the eyes in proper alignment. Eye coordination is a skill that must be developed. Poor eye coordination results from a lack of adequate vision development or improperly developed eye muscle control. Although rare, an injury or disease can cause poor eye coordination.

Because the images seen by each eye must be virtually the same, a person usually compensates for poor eye muscle control by subconsciously exerting extra effort to maintain proper alignment of the eyes. In more severe cases, the muscles cannot adjust the eyes so that the same image is seen and double vision occurs. Because the brain will try to avoid seeing double, it eventually learns to ignore the image sent by one eye. This can result in amblyopia, a serious vision condition commonly known as lazy eye.

Some signs and symptoms that may indicate poor eye coordination include double vision, headaches, eye and body fatigue, irritability, dizziness and difficulty in reading and concentrating. Children may also display characteristics that may indicate poor eye coordination including covering one eye, skipping lines or losing their place while reading, poor sports performance, avoiding tasks that require close work and tiring easily.

Because poor eye coordination can be difficult to detect, periodic optometric examinations, beginning at age 6 months and again at age 3 years are recommended. A comprehensive examination by a doctor of optometry can determine the extent, if any, of poor eye coordination. Poor eye coordination is often successfully treated with eyeglasses and/or vision therapy. The success rate for achieving proper eye coordination is quite high. Sometimes, eye coordination will improve when other vision conditions like nearsightedness or farsightedness are corrected. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.

If you’re like most Americans, you spend at least eight hours a day staring at your computer screen. According to the American Academy of Optometry, just two hours in front of a laptop or computer per day can cause increased eye pain and vision problems.

Computer " Eyegonomics"
You've likely heard of ergonomics, but do you know about “eyegonomics?” When you're spending the day looking at a screen, whether it's a tablet device or a smartphone, you can suffer from eye strain as well as neck pain. You know how it is; you start out sitting straight, but then find yourself slouched over sitting with your neck bent at an uncomfortable angle and before you know it, you have neck and back pain, not to mention red, irritated eyes.Yes, you can get eye strain simply from using a digital device for more than two hours at a time. Think about how many screens you look at during the course of your day. Desktop and laptop computers, smartphones, e-readers, tablets, televisions and gaming systems. In fact, in a survey conducted by The Vision council, more than a third of U.S. adults reported spending four to six hours a day with digital devices.
To help combat the eye fatigue and irritation, the Vision Council offers these tips for incorporating good "eyegonomics" into your day.
  • Use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away
  • Create an ergonomically-friendly work station with proper lighting, seat adjustments, and monitor settings
  • Maintain an appropriate distance from handheld and stationary device screens
  • Enlarge your computer text and browser windows for easier viewing
  • Clean electronic device screens frequently to eliminate dust and glare
  • Remember to blink; staring at screens can dry eyes
