Macular Degeneration

MacularDegenerationMacular degeneration is usually an age-related eye disease that can result in significant vision loss for those who suffer from it. Macular degeneration occurs when the macula, or center part of the retina, begins to deteriorate.

Macular degeneration may not result in total blindness but it can significantly impact a person's ability to see clearly. There is treatment for macular degeneration depending on the form you have. Dry macular degeneration can't be reversed. However, there is macular degeneration treatment available for the wet form.

If you have been diagnosed with macular degeneration or if the eye disease runs in your family, it is important to see an eye doctor on a regular basis to monitor changes in your vision. This can be done with a comprehensive eye exam by a professional optometrist.

Human eye is an amazing organ that most of us rely on every waking moment of the day.

Color Blindness

Color BlindnessContrary to the name, there are very few who suffer from color blindness who do not see any color at all. Most people who are color blind will only be prevented from seeing certain shades of a color or will recognize certain colors as an incorrect color. It is rare that a color blind person will only be able to see grey, black and white.

What Causes Color Blindness?
Color blindness occurs when the there is an issue with the three types of cone cells within the macula that sense red, green and blue colors. If the cone cell is missing, the person won't see that color at all. If something is damaged within the cone cell, the person may only see certain shades of that color or may interpret that color as another such as confusing blue and green.

Will Color Blindness Worsen Over Time?
Color blindness does not get progressively worse over time. It never changes and cannot be corrected. Most people who are color blind have to learn to adapt to a world of color in other ways such as memorizing the order of color on traffic lights.

Tell Your Children to Play Outdoors for Better Eyesight

playing-outside-300x199Now there’s one more reason to tell your kids to play outside! Did you know that children who play outdoors have better eyesight than those who play indoors according to Inquisitr.
Nearsightedness has increased over 65% since 1970 which is largely due to children playing video and computer games. Nearsightedness, also known as Myopia, is a condition where the light that travels into the eye does not focus on the retina but in front of it. This error causes far away images to be blurry. Images that are nearby are not affected and appear clear.

The only way to correct nearsightedness is to wear corrective glasses, contact lenses are surgery. It’s important to book an eye exam for your child if you’re worried as nearsightedness is linked to serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and retina detachment.

Drop in to any 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore location or schedule an exam online. Fun Facts About Your Eyes

EyesOur eyes are very complicated and amazing. They seem pretty simple, but there’s really a lot to know about how they function.
You’ve had your peepers since you were born, so you may think you know them pretty well, but here are some fun facts you may not know about eyes:
  1. The average blink lasts for about 1/10th of a second.
  2. While it takes some time for most parts of your body to warm up to their full potential, your eyes are on their “A game” 24/7.
  3. Eyes heal quickly. With proper care, it only takes about 48 hours for the eye to repair a corneal scratch.
  4. Seeing is such a big part of everyday life that it requires about half of the brain to get involved.
  5. Newborns don’t produce tears. They make crying sounds, but the tears don’t start flowing until they are about 4-13 weeks old.
  6. Around the world, about 39 million people are blind and roughly 6 times that many have some kind of vision impairment.
  7. Doctors have yet to find a way to transplant an eyeball. The optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain is too sensitive to reconstruct successfully.
  8. The cells in your eye come in different shapes. Rod-shaped cells allow you to see shapes, and cone-shaped cells allow you to see color.
  9. You blink about 12 times every minute.
  10. Your eyes are about 1 inch across and weigh about 0.25 ounce.
  11. Some people are born with two differently colored eyes. This condition is heterochromia.
  12. Even if no one in the past few generations of your family had blue or green eyes, these recessive traits can still appear in later generations.
  13. Each of your eyes has a small blind spot in the back of the retina where the optic nerve attaches. You don’t notice the hole in your vision because your eyes work together to fill in each other’s blind spot.
  14. Out of all the muscles in your body, the muscles that control your eyes are the most active.
  15. 80% of vision problems worldwide are avoidable or even curable.
Human eye is an amazing organ that most of us rely on every waking moment of the day.

Choose the Best Eyewear Style for Your Face Shape

Choose the Best Eyewear Style for Your Face ShapeIt's a great time to be wearing glasses. With frames now available in a creative variety of shapes, colors and materials, shopping for a new pair can make you feel like a kid in an eye candy store.

There are general guidelines that can help you hone in on eye wear shapes that will suit and fit your face well while complementing your image and lifestyle needs. First, determine your face shape by pulling back your hair and using a mirror to match up with one of the shapes in the image.

Related article: follow these facial measurements if you want to be more precise.

If you have angular features such as prominent cheekbones and jawline, get curvaceous with rounder frame shapes.

Frame color can really give your eyes a lift.

If you have a higher prescription, keep the frame small so that your eyes don't get magnified comically.

Your eyes should always be centered in the frame—often, this is a matter of fitting but if your nose tends to be flatter on the top, you might need frames with more height to lose that librarian look.
Don't let this confine you to exploring all the great eyewear designs out there.

The best way to know if you're comfortable with a frame is to keep trying them on—what may not look good on the shelf will have a very different feel once you inhabit it.

20/20 Eyeglass Superstore is a family owned and operated business with locations throughout central Florida.  We look forward to becoming your trusted source for everything related to eye problem, eye care, glasses and contacts.

We have over 4000 thousand frames to choose from and we’re known for having a frame for every face and a price for any budget. We also have in-house optometrists that are available for full eye examinations. Check out our coupons page for current offerings as well.

Why Do My Eyes Twitch?

eyes TwitchWhy do my eyes twitch? We’ve all had this happen at one point or another.  Maybe you stayed up late studying or perhaps you stared at your computer for hours on end.

Eye twitching is also known as an eye muscle spasm or involuntary eyelid twitching.  The technical terms for eye twitching include Blepharospasm or Myokmia in case you like knowing fun facts like that! Blepharospasm is defined as any uncontrolled eyelid twitching caused by muscle contractions around the eyes.

Eye twitching can occur under the eye or in the upper eyelid and it can affect the right or left eye.  Eye twitching causes include Benign Essential Blepharospasm (which isn’t harmful), dry eyes, Tourette’s syndrome and strained eyes. Eye twitching should not be confused with drooping eyes which requires serious medical attention as soon as possible.

Keep your eyes hydrated and healthy can definitely help ward off eye twitching.  Eye twitching is also a genetic trait that can run in families or it can be caused by certain types of medication.

Taking good care of your eyes is extremely important, so if you’re experiencing an eye twitch that lasts more than seven days, results in your eye being permanently shut, moves into your entire face, causes redness or swelling and/or changes into a drooping eyelid, contact your Optometrist right away.  Please feel free to contact our in-house 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore Optometrist who will be more than happy to see you as soon as possible. -

Tips for Applying Eye Cosmetics Safely

Tips for Applying Eye Cosmetics SafelyIt's also important to apply your eye makeup safely to help prevent injury. Getting anything that close to your eye can potentially cause damage — so when you're painstakingly drawing that perfect line, take care not to get the cosmetics in your eye.
Here at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, we’re in the business of connecting customers with the perfect pair of eyeglasses, sunglasses and/or contact lenses. Additionally, we love teaching people about proper eye care and tips.

Try these eye cosmetic safety suggestions:
  • Never put your eye cosmetics on while you're driving or riding in a car. Your mascara wand can all too easily scratch your cornea — not to mention the risks of inattentive driving. You may also want to avoid applying eye makeup on buses or subways – sudden stops can also increase the risk that you'll scratch your eye.
  • Skip eye cosmetics when you've got an irritated or infected eye — and if you think that a particular cosmetic is irritating your eyes, stop using it right away.
  • Keep eye cosmetics outside of your eye — don't use eyeliner on the inner eyelids, where makeup can get inside your eye.
  • Always wash your hands before you dig into your makeup bag and start applying eye cosmetics.
  • Avoid eye cosmetics that are iridescent, glittery, or shiny, as they may contain ingredients that could scratch or irritate the eye.
  • Make sure that all eye cosmetic applicators are clean before you use them — it's a good idea to wash or replace all brushes and sponges frequently.
We hope you enjoyed our four tips on applying eye cosmetics safely. Drop in at 20/20 Eyeglass Orangecity Making a budget, updating your prescription, taking care of your eyeglasses and doing your research are great ways to stay on plan!

Prevent Your Eyes From Digital Eye Strain

digital eye strain The easiest way to help yourself reduce risk of digital eye strain when working at a computer or using a portable electronic device is to follow what many eye care providers call the "20-20-20" rule:
Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and view an object that's at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
This simple technique has two important stress-busting effects:
  1. It relaxes eye muscles that keep your eyes focused and aligned when viewing close objects, which reduces eye fatigue.
  2. It stimulates you to blink your eyes, which reduces dry eye symptoms.
Other things you can do to reduce your risk of eye discomfort include:
  • Blink your eyes fully after each page view.
  • Get up from your desk at least every 20 minutes to stretch your body and relax your eyes.
  • Increase the size of the font on your screen.
  • Adjust your device's brightness and/or contrast settings.
  • Purchase a device with a higher resolution screen.
  • Make sure you are holding your device at least 10 to 12 inches from your eyes.

See Your Eye Doctor
Even if you aren't experiencing eye strain from your computer or other electronic devices, it's a good idea to see your eye doctor for a thorough eye exam — especially if you spend several hours a day in front of your screen(s).

Your eye doctor can detect subtle vision problems or eye conditions that might put you at greater risk of digital eye strain, and prescribe remedies to improve your comfort when using your devices.
Also, ask your eye doctor about computer glasses. Eyewear with special tints and coatings can reduce your exposure to potentially harmful blue light and eliminate fatigue-causing glare from light reflecting from the surface of your screen.

Drop into 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore for all your eye care needs. We have a frame for every face and a price for any budget. We also have Independent Optometrists located on site who will be happy to examine your vision. Walk-in’s are welcome but we ask that you come 15 minutes prior to your desired appointment time.

Eating Oranges is Good For Your Eyes

Oranges Growing on TreeOranges are highly beneficial for your body. A medium, 2 1/2-inch orange offers lots of vitamins, minerals and fiber, all for a measly 60 calories. While orange juice is also full of nutrients, you'll miss out on fiber, so it is better to consume the whole fruit. Oranges are easy to tote around, since the thick skin protects them from bruising. Toss one in your bag for a quick mid-morning snack, add orange wedges to a grilled chicken salad or find other ways to add more oranges to your diet.

Oranges are rich in vitamin A, which includes a group of compounds that protect your eyes. Carotenoid compounds of vitamin A, like lutein, beta carotene and zeaxanthin, can help prevent age-related macular degeneration, a condition that leads to blindness. While there is not a specified amount of how much of each carotenoid you should get on a daily basis, vitamin A does have a specific recommendation. Vitamin A allows your eyes to absorb light by keeping membranes surrounding your eyes healthy and also lessens your chances of having night blindness. Men require 900 micrograms of daily vitamin A and women need 700 micrograms, the Office of Dietary Supplements explains. One medium, 2 1/2-inch orange has almost 15 micrograms of vitamin A in addition to high amounts of the other vitamin A-related carotenoids.

Reverse Cataracts With Nutrition

Reverse Cataracts With NutritionThe lens of your eye is normally clear, allowing you to see without obstruction. A cataract is a clouding in the lens that hampers your vision.

Step 1
Eat foods that are high in vitamin C. Foods that contain vitamin C include broccoli, oranges, strawberries, tomatoes, cantaloupe, papaya and green peppers.

Step 2

Go "green" nutritionally to reduce your risk of cataracts, and perhaps to stop existing cataracts from worsening. Green vegetables, especially dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, turnip greens and romaine lettuce, are high in nutrients called lutein and zeaxanthin.

Step 3

Boost your levels of carotenoids, the nutrient that gives fruits and vegetables an orange or red hue. Carrots, squash, peaches, tomatoes and other orange vegetables and fruits provide you with carotenoids.

Step 4

Ask your doctor about taking vitamin supplements if you have an early-stage cataract. Getting high enough levels of antioxidant vitamins C, E and A to make a difference in your eye health may be difficult through diet alone. Supplements in addition to a healthy diet might be able to turn around your eye health.
