Are you due to visit the optometrist?

doctor-visitAre you due to visit the optometrist? Even if you don’t wear glasses and your eyes are feeling fine, we’re here to share several reasons why you should get your eyes tested on a regular basis.

Visiting your local optometrist allows doctors to look directly at your blood vessels which can reveal early warning signs of serious health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes before the symptoms show up anywhere else in the body.

Depending on your health and age, you should also visit the optometrist to make sure you are above driving standards. Sometimes people won’t even realize they have blurred vision as deterioration tends to happen quite slowly over time. Driving standards are very strict and you might be driving illegally without even knowing it! If you were involved in a car accident and your vision was found to be below the legal standard, your insurance might be void. This is a worst case scenario but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

A visit to the optometrist can also let you know if you have a lazy eye. This is especially important for children, so if you are a parent or guardian, make sure you take your kids in for regular eye exams. Check out our post on Top 5 Tips on Choosing Children’s Eyeglasses for more information on bring your kids to the optometrist.

Certain eye diseases such as Glaucoma show no symptoms and most people are unaware of it until it’s too late. Regular visits to your optometrist can easily pick up eye diseases such as these to ensure your vision is protected.

Do you suffer from regular headaches and wonder what the cause is? You should visit your optometrist! A large percentage of headaches are caused by visual problems and most general practitioners will recommend you get your eyes tested to see if that is the problem.
We hope this article has inspired you to visit your local optometrist. Your vision is priceless and a thirty minute appointment once a year is certainly something you should be able to commit too. Getting your eyes tested regularly will help you stay on top of your general health, eye diseases and even headaches!

Eyeglasses For Your Children

iStock_000020074017XSmall-270x300According to Parenting.com, approximately one in twenty preschoolers wear eyeglasses. This is an important statistic to consider if you haven’t taken your child to get his or her eyes checked. If you find out your little bundle of joy needs corrective lenses, here’s how to choose the best frames:

1. Choose eyeglasses that flatter your child’s face. Most children have round faces which means a squarish style will look best. You should also choose smaller frames.

2. Pick frames that are flexible for your child. We know bright, colorful, plastic frames are all the rage for 2013 but they can be brittle and break easily. Metal frames are easier to adjust and you should look for eyeglasses with titanium hinges that will bend easily with your children’s movements.

3. Pick frames that are impact-resistant such as polycarbonate lenses. We all remember gym class, make sure your child’s eyeglasses will stand the “ball in the face” test. Another way to protect your child’s lenses is to add an antireflective coating.

The best way to choose eyeglasses for your children is to include them in the process. Personally, my daughter needed to start wearing eyeglasses when she was six years old. I was very worried that she wouldn’t want to wear eyeglasses, but, surprisingly, she was very excited to purchase her new frames! She started a trend in her school and all the kids begged their parents to purchase frames, even if they didn’t need a prescription!

Lack of Sleep Affects Your Eyesight

Lack of Sleep Affects Your EyesightIn today’s hectic world, it is common to miss out on getting enough sleep each night. The truth is that it is challenging to balance proper rest with all the various activities that need to get completed each day.

Eye Spasms

An eye twitch is when you have an involuntary spasm in your eyelid. This issue is called myokymia.
It turns out, lack of sleep is one of the leading causes of eye spasms. The good news is that it isn’t a serious problem, and it is one that is easily corrected by making sure that you are getting enough quality rest.

Eye Diagnoses Caused by Lack of Sleep

One condition that can result from lack of sleep is ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). This will occur with a pain in the eye shortly after you wake up. Ischemic optic neuropathy is due to damage in the optic nerve from lack of blood supply.

Suggestions for Good Sleep

If you find that you are having a difficult time falling asleep at night, there are various options for remedying the situation. One thing you can do is to try drinking a cup of chamomile tea shortly before you plan to go to bed. This is a great way to relax before sleep.

Another method that works for many people is reading a book in bed. You will likely find yourself getting drowsy, and then you can simply shut off the lights and fall asleep.

Talk to your doctor about potential sleeping issues before they snowball into an issue concerning your eyesight.

Remember that your eyes are kept busy all day long doing their job, and sleeping is the only time that they really get a break. Make sure that they get the rest they deserve by making enough shut-eye a priority!

Prevent Your Glasses from Sliding

Prevent Your Glasses from SlidingIt’s annoying to have your glasses slipping off your nose so often, and it’s equally annoying to keep pushing them back. Here are some tips to help.

• Keep your nose oil free by wiping it with a wet tissue or washing your face with an oil removing face wash.

• Have a rubber patch or an oil absorbing pad on the nose rest of your eyeglass as it will keep the nose rest fixed on your nose for long.

• Buy glasses with a properly fitting bridge so that the nose rest and the glass frame stays close to your face, grabbing your nose.

• You can also have a sling tied to the eyeglass arms behind your head to keep your glasses from falling and slipping.

• Using rubber ear sleeves over each earpiece is also effective. The weight of the frame shifts on to the ears rather than the nose bridge.

• Clean the nose rest often with a piece of cloth to remove the accumulated oil.

• Adjust the nose rest so that the frame sits close to your eyes. If the frame stays close to your eyes, it will not slip.

• Buy lightweight frames as the lighter the frame, the lower the probability of slipping.
