How to Comfort a Sore and Itchy Eye

Ever have one of those days when your eyes just don't stop itching. Where all you want to do is reach up there and scratch it away. Yes, it's quite annoying and happens to everyone. So here are some tips and tricks to keep your eyes feeling good. Even if it is just allergies, these could really help.
  1. Avoid rubbing your eyes. This will just cause them to itch more and become more irritated. Apply a cool or cold compress to your eyes.
  2. Avoid warm or hot compresses for itching. Heat causes increased release of histamines, the chemical that causes itching.
  3. Try rinsing your eye out with a few eye drops. Hopefully, whatever made them itchy in the first place will wash out. This should give some relief. Never put tap water in your eye, it is not sterile and could harbour microorganisms. Over-the-counter artificial tears or allergy drops may be used up to 4 times daily.
  4. If they still hurt after washing them out, and there is little or no improvement in your symptoms, go see an eye doctor. There are great medications that can help relieve most irritated eyes. Your eyes will need to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist, optometrist or competent doctor.
  5. Visit an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore. Irritated eyes can have many causes, some of which are severe and can threaten vision. Only an ophthalmologist (your internist or primary physician will usually refer you to an ophthalmologist) can diagnose. Likely possibilities include dry eye syndrome, ocular allergies, foreign body caught in the eye, allergic reaction to contact lenses, or many other disorders.
  6. Avoid using over-the-counter eye drops for more than one or two days in a row. They may mask a more serious underlying problem that needs treatment by a doctor. Also, if you use over-the-counter drops for more than 3 days in a row, you may experience a rebound effect when you stop using them.

Tips
  • Use a cold wet towel and put it over eyes.
  • Don't scratch your eye. It can cause more irritation.
  • If your problem is allergic, prescription eye medications usually fix 90% of the problem. But be very careful when putting in eyedrops. It should not touch your lashes, as this could contaminate the bottle.
  • Don't wear eye makeup.
  • Avoid self-medication with over-the-counter, or worse, from-the-cabinet eyedrops.
  • Applying cold water and ice with a cotton cloth clears irritation soon.
  • Always visit an eye doctor, such as an ophthalmologist or optometrist before trying any medications!
  • Bathe your eyes with aired milk. Or sit with cold used tea bags on them. Both methods are quite soothing.
  • If your eyes are itchy, it could be because of allergies. Try antihistamines.

How to Care for Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a great choice for many Americans to improve their overall eye health.

Contact lenses are worn by millions of Orlando residents for a variety of reasons. Some people don’t like the appearance of frames and others want to change the color of their eyes.
  1. Acquire contacts by going to an eye doctor, having your eyes checked, and ordering contacts of the correct prescription. Try out a few different samples of contact solution to find out if you are allergic to any and which work the best. Buy any other materials.
  2. Make sure that your hands are clean before handling the lenses. After you have washed your hands with soap and warm water, dry them using a clean towel. Remember – any residue from soaps, lotions, or chemicals may stick to your contact lenses and give rise to irritation, pain, or blurred vision.
  3. Learn how to properly put in contact lenses, preferably from your doctor.
  4. Learn how to properly take out contacts when removing and storing.
  5. Wear your contact lenses for the proper amount of time, as prescribed by your doctor (i.e. 2 weeks, 1 month, etc.).
  6. See your doctor annually to check your contact lens prescription.
  7. Use a re-wetting solution or plain saline solution to keep your eyes lubricated.
Tips
  • To avoid wearing contacts inside out place your contact lens on the tip of your finger so that it is forming a cup. Look at the contact lens from the side. If the cup looks like it is flaring out at the top and has a lip, your contact lens is inside out. If it looks like the letter “U”, the contact lens is right side out.
  • Be patient when you first start wearing contacts. It may take a couple days for your eyes to adjust. Make sure to take them out immediately after work or school so as to give your eyes a rest.
  • If you accidentally nap while wearing contacts put in eye drops and, if needed, remove your contacts.
  • Make sure your hands are clean and your contacts are completely clear of debris before putting it in your eye.
  • Wear your contacts the length of time they are supposed to be worn-if your doctor says 2 weeks, wear them for only 2 weeks. Don’t try and save money by wearing them longer, it’s not worth your eyesight.
  • When travelling carry contacts solution, case, glasses, and eye drops- just in case. You never know if your eyes are going to bug you and it is expensive to throw away contacts. A case that screws on instead of snaps closed is less likely to leak in a bag. Airplanes may require that you carry only a small amount of solution, in a Ziploc bag.
  • You should stick to the prescribed routine as suggested by your eye doctor and wear your contact lenses only for the recommended duration. Cleaning and storing your contact lenses as prescribed also form a vital part of your lens care routine. Since different types of contact lenses need special care and specific products, always use the eye care products that your eye doctor has recommended. If you try to experiment and use eye drops or eye products at your free will, you may end up choosing the ones that are not safe for you.
  • It is advisable to rinse your contact lenses using the recommended solutions and let them air dry. You should not use saliva or plain water directly on your lenses as microorganisms present in them may cause sight damage or infection. In case you feel the symptoms of an eye infection like a burning sensation, redness, or excessive tearing, you should remove your contact lenses and not use them until you have consulted your optometrist.
  • If you think you will have trouble remembering when to change your contact lenses, ask your eye doctor if he or she has a chart that is handed out to patients. If your doctor does not have one, you may want to consider creating one on your own.
  • If debris gets into the eye/contact lens, slide the contact over, look both ways, then roll your eyes.

How to Protect Your Eyes when Using a Computer

Poor Vision Habits You Need to Stop Right Now!

Nowadays, most office workers and many other workforces require computers for working. Working on computers for hours and hours, day in day out, can result in eye strain or injury. Over time, vision may become impaired, eye pain may be felt and ability to adapt to different light may also reduce. Thus, to protect your eyes from getting such symptoms, here are some tips that you can easily follow for your own eye care.
  •   Let your eyes have a break. It is better to leave your seat and find a distant target to look at for about 10 seconds until your vision becomes at infinite focus and your eyes become relaxed.
  • Move your eyes: If you have to sit in front of your computer for hours and do not have a chance to leave your seat, you can do some eye movement exercises as follow: Move your eyes around clockwise; Move your eyes from left to right, from top to bottom. Repeat it 3 times each for relaxing your eyes.
  • Blink your eyes to make tears secrete, keep the eyes wet. This is more important if you wear contact lenses. Many people concentrate too much on their work, blinking infrequently. This results in the eyes becoming drier.
  • Breathe regularly: Help with accelerating blood flow. Because of too much focusing on staring at computer screen, your breath might slow down or become shallow. Hence, remind yourself of breathing regularly and fully for relaxing.
  • Put your computer on a low table, or use a portable computer so your eyes look down when you work. Looking downward means more of the eye surface is covered by the eyelid, and two other things happen: the eyes unconsciously blink more, and they produce more lubrication.
  • Adjust your screen distance. The distance between your eyes and the screen should be from 50 to 70 cm and 10 to 20 cm lower than your eyesight. Since angles and distance can reduce refraction and lessen tiredness for your eyes.
  • Have appropriate light: The ambient light at where you work should have moderate illumination that is helpful to your eyes. Remember that the computer screen already generates its own light that is enough for you to look. If you work in an office with conventional electro-optic lights, you may wish to use another small table lamp when using your computer.
  • Limit contact lens wear: If you are a contact lens wearer and your eyes have very little tears secreted and easily get dry, you may wish to consider wearing normal glasses instead of contact lenses. People who use computers for long period of time should consider regular (e.g. 6 months) eye sight check-ups with an optician.
  • Eat food for sight (DHA): Some kinds of sea fish contain DHA which can be good for the eyes' retinas and prevent eye injury and Cataract. The best sources include salmon, trout, sardines, herring and Arctic char. Vegetable wise: carrots, limes and green vegetables are also recommended for eyes. Seeds include antioxidants which can reduce eyes degeneration and may help preserve or improve eyesight.
  • Get more Vitamin A from fruits and vegetables: Certain foods with Vitamin A can help with the health of your eyes. These include certain fruits (e.g., mango, tomatoes and watermelon), vegetables (e.g., carrots, pumpkin and sweet potato), cereals, fish and eggs. Drinking plenty of water also helps to reduce eyes drying as water can help with hydration.
