Smartphones Are Not Good For Your Eyes

Reading short messages or surfing the Internet through a smartphone tends to force people’s eyes to work harder than when reading books or newspapers. A study involving 130 volunteers, with an average age of 23.3 years old, studied how people hold the phone while reading a short message. Then, another 100 volunteers, with an average age of 24.9 years old were studied while they read the pages.

When we read newspapers, books, or printed magazines, the average distance to the eye is 40.64 centimeters. Apparently in average, people who read or send short messages is only 35.56 centimeters.

In some people, it is even closer about 17.78 centimeters. The research was done by a team from ‘SUNY State College of Optometry’ in New York City, the study states that the additional burden would cause complaints such as headaches, dry eyes, discomfort, myopic, and tension in the eyes.

Eating Fish Can Prevent Blindness

The older people get, their eyesight ability will certainly decrease, and their vision will get more blurred. What’s more worrying is at the age of 40 years and over, threats of vision problems such as cataracts or glaucoma may occur. But do not worry too much, because there is a way to avoid the threat of blindness, which is by regularly eating fish 2 times a week.

Fish are known as a healthy food because it contains nutrient content. Besides that, fish are also free of bad fats. Recent studies shows that by regularly eating fish once or twice a week, people can reduce the risk of blindness due to decreased vision associated with age.

Omega-3 fatty acids which are most commonly found in oil fish like salmon and tuna can help prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a condition that causes a gradual loss of vision with age.

AMD is caused by damage and death of cells in the macula, which is one part of the retina that is used to look straight ahead.

Researchers found that just one or two servings of fish a week can reduce the risk of visual impairment by 42 percent in elder women. These findings support previous studies that showed similar results in men.

Omega 3, which is commonly found in food are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or also can be consumed in supplement form.

“‘Dark meat’ fish helps most. Lower risk of blindness appears mainly due to the consumption of tuna and dark meat fish like salmon and sardines,” explains lead author, Dr. William Christen of Harvard Medical School, according to the Telegraph.

Cholesterol drug could prevent blindness?

Eye drops that are designed to lower cholesterol could likely prevent macular function decline, one of the most common types of blindness. This is because high cholesterol is also associated with reduction in the power of vision.

Researchers conducted tests on mice and humans. They found that high cholesterol levels can affect the immune system. Not only that, the cells can also be damaged if it constantly is clogged by fat due to high cholesterol.

Researchers then examined whether eye drops that are used to lower cholesterol, can be useful to maintain a healthy macula. They found that eye drops can be used to prevent macula covered by fat due to high cholesterol. The drug also prevents fatty deposits around the retina.

Even so, the researcher believes that this research is still in the early stages. They will conduct further experiments to see the results of definite usability of eye drops to lower cholesterol and the prevention of blindness.

Keep Your Eyes Healthy

One of the best places to go if you are having issues with your eye health is to an ophthalmology center. Almost everyone seems to believe that anytime you have any problems with your eyes it means that you're going to need a pair of glasses. While glasses may be a good option for many, some conditions can't be remedied with a simple trip to a generic eye doctor. You should visit a facility that will be able to help you determine whether or not you have any serious conditions.

Just as it is important to get your ears checked every once in a while, it is important to get your eyes checked out as well. There are some conditions that need to be diagnosed as soon as possible. It is incredibly important to remember that you should not diagnose or try to treat yourself. Do not ignore any pain or discomfort that you might be having in your eyes. Even if you are not having trouble with your eyes all the time, it is still incredibly important to visit an Ophthalmology center so you will be able to get the help that you need.

When you have made the choice to visit a facility, remember not to over think your situation so that you can get the help that you need. It can be very easy to have a lot of anxiety if you feel there's something wrong with your eyes. In this case, it's best to simply relax and make sure you attend your appointment. You will have several tests ran so that the ophthalmology practice will be able to determine if there's anything wrong with your eyes. You'll need to give a complete medical history so that they will be able to determine if you had any vision disturbances or any other issues with your eyes. It is extremely important to share any information that you can think of concerning your eyesight. Always remember that the eye doctor is there to help you so you need to share as much information as possible concerning the situation.
