Anti-Glare Glasses

anti-glare-glassesAnti-glare glasses are special glasses designed to help reduce and relieve eye strain caused by looking at a computer for a period of time. When you stare at a computer screen, it forces your eye muscles to remain in one position. Generally, this position is also at a strenuous level. Anti-glare glasses help to reduce this strain.
Eye strain is characterized by blurred vision, burning eyes, headache, and tired eyes. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms while using the computer, anti-glare glasses may be a wise buy for you. Even if you are not a regular computer user, your eyes may benefit from anti-glare glasses. In addition to being affected by the glare from your computer screen, your eyes can be come strained from being in a room with poor lighting. Anti-glare glasses can also be beneficial for this type of situation, as they help reduce the strain on your eyes.
Anti-glare glasses help reduce the amount of strain your eyes feel by reducing the convergence of your eyes and by helping to reposition your eyes to a more comfortable position. This reduces the strain placed on the muscles in your eyes, as well as the tension your eyes experience. In addition, anti-glare glasses help reduce the amount of ultraviolet radiation that reaches your eyes, and they do not magnify the light like traditional eyeglasses do.
Anti-glare glasses can also be glasses with a special anti-reflective coating.  In addition, it eliminates the appearance of “halos” around the headlights of cars at night. If this distracts you while you are driving, anti-glare glasses may be right for you.
On the down side, anti-glare glasses with this special coating are more prone to becoming scratched and to holding oily fingerprints. In order to prevent scratching, it is necessary to use a special cloth to wipe anti-glare glasses clean.

The Best Way to Clean Your Glasses

The Best Way to Clean Your GlassesNearly 50% of Americans wear corrective glasses, according to the trade group Vision Council. And most of them are guilty of the biggest crime in lens care: Exhaling onto their lenses, then wiping the fog off with their shirt sleeves. But does this really damage your lenses?

Simple Solution
The best way to clean your glasses is to run them under warm water and put a tiny drop of dish washing detergent on the tip of your fingers to create a lather on the lens. Then rinse with warm water, and dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth.

Glass vs. Plastic
Of the 69.1 million Americans who bought prescription spectacles last year, most purchased plastic lenses; glass has gone out of fashion as safety concerns have arisen. Unlike that hard surface, plastic is soft and can scratch easily.

Attempting to clean glasses when dry only exacerbates the problem, since a wet surface is slicker than a dry one.

Reflecting on the Problem
Lenses typically have some form of protective coating and should never come into contact with ammonia, bleach, vinegar or window cleaner. "Those chemicals can break down the coating or just strip them.

Clean Lines
Natural oils from your hands, eyelashes and face can lead to a lot of buildup each day, reducing lenses' effectiveness.

Whatever you do, don't use the most handy form of water to clean your lenses.

Home Care for a Foreign Object in the Eye

Foreign Object in the EyeIf you suspect you have a foreign object in your eye, it is important to initiate treatment promptly to avoid infection and the possibility of damaged vision. Take these precautions:
  • Do not rub or put pressure on the eye.
  • Do not use any utensils or implements, such as tweezers or cotton swabs, on the surface of the eye.
  • Do not remove contact lenses unless there is sudden swelling or you have suffered a chemical injury.
If you suspect you have a foreign object in your eye or are attempting to help someone who has one, take the following preliminary steps before initiating any home care:
  • Wash your hands.
  • Look at the affected eye in an area with bright light.
  • To examine the eye and find the object, look up while pulling the lower lid down. Follow this by looking down while flipping up the inside of the upper lid.
The safest technique for removing a foreign object from your eye will differ according to the type of object you are trying to remove and where it is located in the eye.
The most common location for a foreign object is under the upper eyelid. To remove a foreign object in this position:
  • Immerse the side of your face with the affected eye in a flat container of water. While the eye is under water, open and close the eye several times to flush out the object.
  • The same results can be accomplished using an eyecup purchased from a drugstore.
  • If the object is stuck, pull out the upper lid and stretch it over the lower lid to loosen the object.
To treat a foreign object located beneath the lower eyelid:
  • Pull out the lower eyelid or press down on the skin below the eyelid to see underneath it.
  • If the object is visible, try tapping it with a damp cotton swab.
  • For a persistent object, try to flush it out by flowing water on the eyelid as you hold it open.
  • You also can try using an eyecup to flush out the object.
If there are many tiny fragments from a substance, such as grains of sand in the eye, you will have to flush out the particles instead of removing each one individually. To do this:
  • Use a wet cloth to remove any particles from the area surrounding the eye.
  • Immerse the side of your face with the affected eye in a flat container of water. While the eye is under water, open and close the eye several times to flush out the particles.
  • For younger children, pour a glass of warm water into the eye instead of immersing it. Hold the child face up. Keep the eyelid open while you pour water into the eye to flush out the particles. This technique works best if one person pours the water while another holds the child’s eyelids open.

Leading Cause of Blindness

Leading Cause of BlindnessCataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and there are more than 24 million Americans age 40 and older who have cataract in the United States alone, according to the Vision Problems in the U.S. report from Prevent Blindness.  Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye.

The recent Cost of Vision Problems:  The Economic Burden of Vision Loss and Eye Disorders in the United States report found that at $10.7 billion, cataract is the second costliest vision disorder (behind refractive error) and the most expensive medical diagnosis.
The exact cause of a cataract is unknown.  Most often, a cataract is part of getting older. With age comes a greater risk of developing a cataract. There are also several possible risk factors for cataracts, such as:
  • Intense heat or long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun
  • Certain diseases, such as diabetes
  • Inflammation in the eye
  • Hereditary influences
  • Events before birth, such as German measles in the mother
  • Long-term steroid use
  • Eye injuries
  • Eye diseases
  • Smoking
“The best thing we can do to protect our vision is to get regular eye exams,” said Hugh R. Parry   “We can also save our vision by maintaining healthy lifestyles like eating leafy green vegetables, exercising and quitting smoking.  All we do to benefit our overall health can benefit our eyes as well!”

Take the Best Care of your Eyeglasses

If you're like me, some of the best moments you can have with a new pair of spectacles or sunglasses is when they're new. On top of the excitement of adding a gorgeous new piece to your eyewear wardrobe, the feeling of wearing a frame that's perfectly adjusted for maximum comfort and so pristinely clean is a precious pleasure.
Take the Best Care of your Eyeglasses

1) Always Use a Lens Cloth
Your optician will always provide a micro-fiber lens cloth in your spectacle case with your glasses use it!
2) Give Your Glasses a Bath
A little bowl of warm, soapy water, a few swirls, wipe dry with your lens cloth, and voila!

3) Handle With T.L.C.Tender Loving Care
Dont leave your glasses out in the sun, like in the garden or on a vehicle dashboard, as high temperatures can inspire your frame to get more flexible than you bargained for and melt or lose its shape.
Use both hands to wear or remove your glasses, holding the frame at its strongest parts—its front or its temples.

4)Rest In Peace
Always rest your glasses folded up and flat, or open and standing stably. Lots of wearers need to replace their lenses more often than necessary because of scratching from placing their spectacles face down.

Tips to Care for Your Eyeglasses

8 Tips to Care for Your EyeglassesYou invest a lot of time in finding the right pair of eyeglasses. You look for the right frame shape, in a pattern or color that perfectly expresses you. You patiently wait for the lenses to be fitted and for that call telling you that your new eyeglasses are ready for pick up.

Don't you want to do everything you can to make these glasses last as long as possible?

Tips To Maintain Eyeglasses

Here are some great tips on how to take proper care of your eyeglasses that will help make them last:

Rinse
Always rinse your glasses off with water before wiping or cleaning them. Even tiny particles of dust or dirt can settle on your lens, and if you wipe those around on a dry lens, it can be abrasive.

Spray Carefully
If you're going to use a chemical, use sprays or cleansers that are specifically made to clean eyeglass lenses.

Air Dry
If you can, allow your glasses to air dry. This is another great way to keep any materials from getting on to your lens. If you can't set them down to air dry, wipe them down with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth.

Use the Right Cloth
Never use paper towels, tissue, or napkins to dry your lenses. All of these materials, regardless of how soft they are on your skin, have a textured surface and can easily scratch your lenses.
Also, refrain from using the tail of your shirt.

Grip Firmly
Hold your frames by gripping the piece that crosses the bridge of the nose. This will keep you from accidently bending the frame while you clean. Bent glasses can negatively affect the way you see out of your glasses. Plus, if your frames are bent out of shape, they're more likely to feel uncomfortable.

Store Properly
Store your glasses when you're not wearing them. This isn't just a great way to keep dust and dirt away from your eyeglasses, but it also protects your specs from getting scratched, bent or broken.

Place Carefully
Don't lay your glasses lens down. This is just asking for scratched lenses.

Wash Often
Washing your glasses at least once a day will keep your lenses in their optimal state. The cleaner your glasses, the less your eyes have to strain to see through smudges, dirt and dust.

Protecting Eyes from Ultraviolet Rays May Help Save Vision

Protecting Eyes from Ultraviolet Rays Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can be very harmful to the body.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.  Yet the most preventable cause of this type of cancer is exposure to UV light.
Eye problems that UV rays can cause include:

Cataract- UV rays, especially UV-B rays, may also cause some kinds of cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, the part of the eye that focuses the light we see.

Corneal Sunburn- Corneal sunburn, called photokeratitis, is the result of high short-term exposure to UV-B rays. Long hours at the beach or skiing without proper eye protection can cause this problem. It can be very painful and may cause temporary vision loss.

Macular Degeneration- UV rays may lead to macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss for older Americans.

Pterygium- A growth that begins on the white of the eye and may involve the cornea. Eventually, the growth may block vision. It is more common in people who work or spend extended periods of time outside in the sun and wind.

Skin Cancer- Skin cancer around the eyelids is also linked to prolonged UV exposure.
There are different types of UV. UV-A radiation has lower energy and penetrates deep into the eye which may injure the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sight in the center field of vision.  UV-B radiation is presumably more dangerous and is mainly absorbed by the cornea and lens of the eye and can damage those tissues.

Double Vision (Diplopia)

Double Vision (Diplopia)Double vision, or diplopia, is a symptom to take seriously. Some causes of diplopia are relatively minor, but others need urgent medical attention.
What Causes Double Vision?
Opening your eyes and seeing a single, clear image is something you probably take for granted. But that seemingly automatic process depends on the orchestration of multiple areas of the vision system. They all need to work together seamlessly:
  • The cornea is the clear window into the eye. It does most of the focusing of incoming light.
  • The lens is behind the pupil. It also helps focus light onto the retina.
  • Muscles of the eye -- extraocular muscles -- rotate the eye.
  • Nerves carry visual information from the eyes to the brain.
  • The brain is where several areas process visual information from the eyes.
Problems with any part of the vision system can lead to double vision.

Cornea problems: Problems with the cornea often cause double vision in one eye only. Covering the affected eye makes the double vision go away. The abnormal surface of the eye distorts incoming light, causing double vision. Damage can happen in several ways:
  • Infections of the cornea, such as herpes zoster, or shingles, can distort the cornea.
  • Corneal scars can alter the cornea, creating unequal visual images.
  • Dryness of the cornea can create double vision.
Lens problems: Cataracts are the most common problem with the lens that causes double vision. If cataracts are present in both eyes, images from both eyes will be distorted. Cataracts are often correctable with minor surgery.

Muscle problems. If a muscle in one eye is weak, that eye can't move smoothly with the healthy eye.
Nerve problems: Several different conditions can damage the nerves that control eye muscles and lead to double vision:
  • Multiple sclerosis can affect nerves anywhere in the brain or spinal cord. If the nerves controlling the eyes are damaged, double vision can result.
  • Diabetes can lead to nerve damage affecting the muscles which move the eyes, causing double vision.
Brain problems: The nerves controlling the eyes connect directly to the brain. Further visual processing takes place inside the brain. Many different causes for double vision originate in the brain. They include:
  • Strokes
  • Aneurysms
  • Increased pressure inside the brain from trauma, bleeding, or infection
  • Brain tumors
  • Migraine headaches

Keratoconus

KeratoconusWe see through the cornea, which is the clear, central part of the front surface of the eye. Normally, the cornea has a dome shape, like a ball. Sometimes, however, the structure of the cornea is just not strong enough to hold this round shape and the cornea bulges outward like a cone. This condition is called keratoconus.

What Causes Keratoconus?

Tiny fibers of protein in the eye called collagen help hold the cornea in place and keep it from bulging. When these fibers become weak, they cannot hold the shape and the cornea becomes progressively more cone shaped.

Keratoconus appears to run in families. If you have it and have children, it’s a good idea to have their eyes checked for it starting at age 10. The condition happens more often in people with certain medical problems, including certain allergic conditions. It's possible the condition could be related to chronic eye rubbing. Most often, though, there is no eye injury or disease that can explain why the eye starts to change.

Keratoconus usually starts in the teenage years. It can, though, begin in childhood or in people up to about age 30. It's possible it can occur in people 40 and older, but that is less common.
The changes in the shape of the cornea can happen quickly or may occur over several years. The changes can result in blurred vision, glare and halos at night, and the streaking of lights.
The changes can stop at any time, or they can continue for decades. In most people who have keratoconus, both eyes are eventually affected, although not always to the same extent. It usually develops in one eye first and then later in the other eye.

Can Keratoconus Damage Vision?

The changes to the cornea can make it impossible for the eye to focus without eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Eye Health and Blepharitis

Blepharitis Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids, usually caused by an excess growth of bacteria that is ordinarily found on the skin, blockage of the eyelid's oil glands, and occasionally allergies.

Blepharitis is a common eye condition, causing the eyelids to be reddened, itchy, and somewhat swollen and scaly-appearing at the base of the eyelashes. It is the most common cause of dry eyes. A dysfunction of the eyelid's oil glands that leads to blepharitis occurs because of a hormone imbalance.

Swollen, Red Eyelids and Other Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

What Are the Symptoms of Blepharitis?

The symptoms of blepharitis include:
  • Feeling like something is in your eye
  • Burning of the eye
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Red and swollen eyes or eyelids
  • Blurry vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Crusting of the eyelashes

How Is Blepharitis Treated?

Blepharitis cannot be cured. However, it can be treated and controlled through proper eyelid hygiene. Left untreated, blepharitis can cause more serious conditions such as scarring or injury to the eye's tissue. If you have blepharitis, take the steps listed below to help treat and cleanse your eye:
  • Take a clean washcloth and wet it in very warm water. Wring the washcloth and place it over the closed eyelids for five minutes. Re-wet as necessary to maintain desired temperature. This will help to soften crusts and loosen oily debris.
  • Place the warm, wet washcloth over the index finger and apply a diluted solution of 50% baby shampoo or mild soap.
  • Cleanse one eye at a time, closing the eye you are cleansing, and rubbing the washcloth or your finger over the eyelashes and lid margins several times using horizontal strokes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with a clean, warm, wet washcloth. Pat dry.
If the blepharitis is related to a problem with the oil glands, treatment may involve applying testosterone eye cream to the eyelids.

How Do I Prevent Blepharitis?
If you are in the early stages of treating blepharitis, avoid the use of eye makeup to prevent further irritation. Once you begin using makeup again, replace your products used in or near the eyelids because they may be contaminated.

Are 3-D Movies Bad for Your Eyes?

Are 3-D Movies Bad for Your Eyes? With the popularity of 3-D movies, it's natural to wonder what, if any, effect the technology has on your eyes. Is 3-D technology healthy for your or your children's eyes?

Although there are no long-term studies, Eye M.D.s say there is no reason to be concerned that 3-D movies, TV or video games will damage the eyes or visual system. Some people complain of headaches or motion sickness when viewing 3-D, which may indicate that the viewer has a problem with focusing or depth perception. Also, the techniques used to create the 3-D effect can confuse or overload the brain, causing some people discomfort even if they have normal vision.

If a healthy child consistently develops headaches or tired eyes or cannot clearly see the images when using 3-D digital products, this may indicate a vision or eye disorder.

However, children who have eye conditions such as amblyopia (an imbalance in visual strength between the two eyes), strabismus (misaligned eyes), or other conditions that persistently inhibit focusing, depth perception or normal 3-D vision, would have difficulty seeing digital 3-D images. That does not mean that vision disorders can be caused by 3-D digital products.
